Windows 10

That is strange. I have upgraded about four desktops, three laptops and four tablets and thought that if you had a local account with no password then by default you would go straight to the desktop. If you have a live account with a password then you would get to the lockscreen...?

I just upgraded my Acer Iconia W8 tablet to 10 and it went to the desktop, but I had ran netplwiz on the Win 8.1 install to negate the lockscreen for my live account.

Good luck with the reset.

Considering nobody else is having this problem, it's clearly an issue with your specific setup and peripherals.

Found plenty of reports of other people having the same problem on the Microsoft forum. Unfortunately, the response to "I'm stuck at the lock screen, keyboard and mouse doesn't work" from a moderator was "boot into safe mode by holding shift and clicking restart". :D

Is there an option in your BIOS for doing a full scan of legacy USB at boot time? If so, make sure that is enabled rather than any kind of partial support or fast boot. Make sure you install the latest USB drivers for your motherboard. You might have to supply these during a re-install. Try plugging in via a USB2/USB3 to see if one works better than the other at boot time.

I've seen this problem before, and the two solutions were making sure the BIOS was taking time to scan USB properly at boot time, and (after installing new USB drivers and rebooting) and waiting a surprisingly long time whilst windows installed the drivers in the background whilst waiting at a login screen with nothing apparently working.

Thanks. I have checked the BIOS and as far as I can see the legacy options were enabled. As I said, mouse and kb seem to be oppressive right up until the lock screen. Tried changing USB ports...nothing.

If the reset gets me to the desktop, first thing I'll do is disable the lock screen entirely.

You shouldn't need any legacy USB options enabled with Windows 10. Have you tried disabling them?

Yup. No effect. Mouse and keyboard work fine in BIOS. As soon as Windows loads to this screen...nothing.

In fact, with the legacy options disabled, they were completely dead...No lights or power.

Anyway, the reset failed. After a few restarts, it's taking me back to the lock screen again. At a complete loss at the moment.

So it looks like Windows needs drivers for your USB.

I guess.
But then, both the mouse and keyboard worked fine straight after the install, and for hours after that. Everything was working. No errors, no failed drivers...but after the first restart, it got stuck at the lock screen.

I can only assume the restart must have updated the drivers for the motherboard and broken them or something.

finally figured out how to use Windows Photo Viewer instead of the Photo app to open up pictures on default.

Simple trying to assign WPV as default or associate jpg, png etc. with it, does not work.

I guess you missed the bit during install where you set the default apps?

Yes, that's exactly it. After install, you're still using the original drivers, and then as you reboot, it installed new drivers that don't work or failed to install the new drivers altogether. That's why I suggested trying an USB2 port at that might work and get you into the system to install new drivers if it's your USB3 ports that are not working. Pluging/unplugging might also trigger Windows to install drivers.

uhm...no?
just for fun, try to make WPV to open up jpg files on default on your W10.

Right click on .jpg > Open With > Choose Another App > Select Windows Photo Viewer > Tick Always use this app to open .jpg files > Click Ok.

Exactly as every recent version of Windows worked?

Yeah I've made sure I'm using the 2.0/1.1 ports...nothing. Replugging doesn't do anything. So frustrating...I'll see if I can get back to the recovery screen again, perhaps there's a restore option :(

In your position I'd try a few cold reboots, wait to see if things get recognised and driver installed, then possibly reinstall Windows supplying the drivers at the beginning of the reinstall, and maybe installing drivers after install but before the first reboot.

Maybe do a lot of googling to see if anyone else has come up with a solution? Was yours an upgrade from an old installation of Windows? There's a lot of corruption that can sneak into an old installation, even though it still seems to be running okay, and then an upgrade gets things wrong trying to keep the old setup. Possibly a clean install will get it right.

Did you make a disk from any iso ir can you? Would be interesting to see if you booted to disk for a fresh install, if the mouse worked on the install page. Although, it may not automatically try and install without "press any key to boot from disk"

Exactly, clean install is always best with a complete format of the system drive. Much more reliable.
