Windows 10

I used an old version of MediaCreationTool.exe that I downloaded on 12/11/2015 and this downloaded an ISO image which installs build 10586.

I then downloaded MediaCreationTool today from Microsoft, I had to choose if I wanted Home or Professional, which then downloaded an image which installs build 10240.

I wonder why Microsoft have done this? Is there a problem with the 10586 installation files?

Fair enough if MS have a valid reason, but it's going to make the installation of Windows 10 so much longer now. :(

Is there a transfer util for just old files on win 7/8
I remember there used to be something like that. I couldnt upgrade the actual windows as it has problems with various services though its worked fine on other machines Ive been asked to do, this time I will have to manually reinstall pretty much but all the little settings would be useful to transfer

Anyone else find that the lock screen spotlight feature doesn't work since it was added to the pro edition in the fresh hold 2 update?

Ed Bott reports that Microsoft has reinstated the ISOs of its recently released major update for Windows 10, known as Version 1511 (Build 10586), and has issued a statement. Microsoft explains that the major update was temporarily pulled because it accidentally reset several privacy-related settings to their defaults (on). Microsoft has now issued a new Cumulative Update for Windows 10 which rectifies this issue.

Update: Another privacy-related change in Version 1511, which Microsoft hasn't publicly acknowledged in its statement, is reported here: the Diagnostics Tracking Service was renamed to the Connected User Experiences and Telemetry Service, and re-enabled by default.

Can someone please confirm if I will need to buy a new w10 product key when I upgrade? (mobo, cpu)

Have searched other sites but some say yes & no.

No, if it doesn't activate online just give MS a call on the free number and you should be activated in 5mins.

Done the phone activation many times.

Looking to do a fresh install of windows 10 Home replacing Windows 7 on my Desktop next week. Would everyone still recommending doing so? :p

I think that the problem when it comes to Windows 10, and 8.1 was the same... not so much 8 but then...

But the thing is, that Windows 7 is so perfect, that you have to ask yourself if you absolutely cannot do without any of the features that windows 10 gives you?

In truth, the ONLY reason that I use Windows 8.1 on my main PC and not Windows 7, is that its a bigger number.

The only reason that I have not yet upgraded to Windows 10 on this machine, is that Windows 8.1 is running absolutely flawlessly, and I just cannot be bothered.

In truth, I much prefer Windows 7 because it looks so good and I have found, that since 8 came out, its just looked cartoon-ish.

Even more sickening, is that the latest Linux KDE Distros have now taken on that same junk look that Windows 10 has.

I have software that is very important to me, and it does not run under Windows 8 and above, but its great in Windows 7. That means that I need to keep one of my systems running Windows 7 just for that one application.

I am also using Window Blinds just to give my PC a bit more of a Windows 7 look and feel, but its just not the same.

When it comes to reinstalling Windows, there is actually a strong chance, that I will be going back to Windows 7, because Windows 8 and even 10, gives me absolutely nothing that Windows 7 does not, but has the minus of looking awful.

That said, I do think that 8 and 10 are a tiny bit quicker, they are of course much more up to date and the numbers 8 and 10 are higher than 7 so thats a clear winner right there LOL

On a more serious note, in the end, its up to you. I think that Microsoft has ironed out all the wrinkles by now, and there is only a few few number of people who are getting issues, sso the chances are, you will be fine.

There is always a risk to going from A to B but these days, the road is well kept.

Only reason I need Win10 is gaming , as to Win7 well if I did not game I would be on Linux for good and never touch Windows period, personally Win7 was not perfect in my books, just a rehash of previous Windows.

Win10 however does have a few advantages over older Windows ie speed, DX12, improved security and free for 7/8 users so in many ways worth the upgrade.

Everyone praises Windows 7 but I much prefer the look and feel of windows since Windows 8, 7 as just an updated version of Windows 2000 and kept the horrible grey image.

Windows 8 brought a modern looking UI to the table with an updated start menu ( much to the dislike of the traditionalists)....

Windows 10 is great in appearance, yes it has problems, but, which version of Windows didn't?

Now then, I don't game, except the odd browser based, and Windows 10 for me is very smooth, is much better on memory management and has an inviting look and feel, which I never felt with 7...

of course it's all personal opinion and the Microsoft are going with 10 seems to be a good on for most of the users globally....

Wouldn't let me do this last time I tried (a month or so ago).

I rang several times in case it were just the handler being an ass but they made me install 8, activate, then install 10. Pain in the bum :/

Old builds you had to install 7/8 first, the upgrade to 10, activate... only after this you had the ability to do a fresh install of 10.
