Windows 10

Quick question,

I purchased a Tesco Connect tablet with win 10 on and was all good until recently it has now just conked out on me.

I'm about to return it but I'm just worried that if they repair it that they will then just turn it on and have access to my files etc that are on there. Now, it was connected to Microsoft account and I used to use a pin to login. Im hoping they will just see this and reformat but I'm just paranoid they can reset the password and have access to my files!?

Reset to factory state yourself?

Sigh the update keeps freezing at 17% then "restoring your previous version of windows" then forcing the new update and trying to reinstall it again next reboot... constantly... ******* retards whoever thought forced automatic updates are a good idea.

I was having something like this with a previous build where it wouldn't update the build, it would stop and reset to the older build.

Only way to get past it was a full format and fresh install of newer build.

This is a less than 2 day old fresh install :S clean install that is upto date minus the latest build of 1511.

EDIT: Now its stuck at "Configuring update for Windows 10... 0% complete" looks like its completely broke my install... good job MS... good job...

EDIT2: On the plus side... they've finally put the "Show more tiles" option back in this build allowing 4 medium tiles wide... makes the start menu 10x more useful for me and looks better.

^^ Just repeated the exact same steps as I started 2 days ago and it took this time - I resent the amount of time spent looking at the Windows install/update screens than actually using the device though.

Just had the new windows 10 update applied to my windows 10 laptop so i now have the 20+gb windows.old folder. Is this going to happen with every big update they do from now on?

^^ I'd literally just discovered and got done removing that through Disk Cleanup (advanced options) - 19GB out of a 32GB SSD on the tablet is a bit lol...

I wonder if the fact its there is anything to do with the rather high chance this update seems to have of failing :S

Miss the days when I felt like I had proper control of my desktop environment - when I actually need to move on from Windows 7 on my main system(s) Windows 10 might actually be the OS that forces me to Linux. Such a shame as the OS has a load of potential but some really backwards decisions by MS (though they seem to be slowly moving back towards more sensible implementations of stuff - kick and dragging their heels as they go along though :( - the 1511 update does actually re-enable/put back some features that make the OS 10x more useable for me).

I was under the impression that it is there in case you decide (for whatever reason!) to revert back to your previous version of Windows, and that the folder will be automatically deleted after 30 days.

I know what you mean, just did the disk clean up option to get rid of it dont think i will bother re-installing from scratch for now though with the usb creation tool which from what i understand now has the latest updated version.

Thats what i thought, i upgraded to windows 10 from windows 8 then i installed it again from scratch so never had the windows.old folder. Seems i just got it from the latest update.

I have used magic jelly bean to find out my windows 10 key so if i was to reinstall from scratch now could i just use this key instead of the old windows 8 key that i upgraded from a few months back? Dont think i can find the old 8 key so im hoping i can just use the windows 10 key

decided to bring my pc up to date this week.

bought a copy of w10 and downloaded the iso.

a fresh windows install is very nice and clutter free.

liking what ive seen so far.

Nice tool. One of my biggest gripes with Windows 10 currently is how it is forced onto machines you do not want it on, by nagging you until you upgrade.

What version of Windows did you have before? If you had Windows 7 or up you can upgrade for free?

Possibly like me... he wanted a nice little piece of plastic with a full Windows 10 retail key on it. Or maybe couldn't be bothered with faffing about with upgrading his current OS. Or he wanted to use his current copy of Windows 7 on another machine.

Each to their own though.

Haven't used W10 since August but now, trying it again on the same hardware, it's improved a lot. OS responsiveness is right up there with Windows 8.x now.
