Windows 10

I ended up having to reinstall a number of drivers. Win10 works well up to a point but this endless patching makes it just a complete nightmare.

They also seem to have removed the 'Don't let Windows 10 overwrite my drivers' check box in System -> Advanced settings.

Every time I've rebooted my PC this weekend I've had to delete then re-install the audio driver to get my X-fi to work.

Not happy.

Quick question folks and its probably been asked before in this huge thread but I keep getting the nag box popping up for me to upgrade from W8.1 to 10. I use this main desktop PC for some work related stuff including Adobe CS6 and can't really afford to have any massive compatibility issues after I've upgraded. To that end I've been ignoring the nag box and putting off the upgrade. Am I right to be concerned or for most folk has the upgrade all gone to plan with no real issues to speak of afterwards? (bit of a 'how long is a piece of string question, I know).

Also, my main C: O/S SSD drive is a 60Gb one and I've got 12Gb free space on it. Once I've downloaded and installed W10, how much of a chunk am I going to lose of space? Can I do some housekeeping afterwards like getting rid of the downloaded installation files etc? And does W10 make a windows.old copy of my 8.1 install so I can roll back to 8.1 if I need to?

Apologies if these are n00b questions which have already been answered.

You _can_ roll back with some caveats.

On my tablet after removing gunk and adding some basic programs Windows 10 is taking up a little over 12GB though that will grow a bit with time. I've not seen that much in the way of compatibility issues to be honest - 1-2 things aside it mostly just works with 7/8 drivers if it comes to it - until Windows decides its going to do its own thing and try and replace them :S

Honestly can't recommend it at the moment - they seriously need to give us back options to control Windows Updates and drivers properly its completely ruining my usage experience at the moment on my Windows 10 tablet and actually results in me more often picking up my older Windows 8 tablet than moving to my newer 10 one :(

My Windows 10 died over the weekend. It was not detecting my ASmedia drives at all, even after multiple drive installs etc...

The drives where being detected in the BIOS, and a new install of Windows 10, even in the installer worked instantly.

Has anyone else had issues on the Asmedia 106x my board is the Asus Rampage IV, but I know other boards have this same chip set.

My windows update thing is just stuck at 0% :\ Has been for the last 6 or so hours in total.

Did it for me - I gave up after about 6 hours and one way or another it hosed my install - ended up in a constant loop of restoring my previous OS/trying to update to the new one - did (another) fresh install on top of what was pretty much a fresh install and then the update took and only spent 2 hours at that stage before completing.

I had problems with windows update as well getting stuck, or when it did download it wouldn't install so I just used the Media creation tool for the latest build ISO, and installed it via disk instead.

Much easier.

Strange one this but maybe someone can shed some light on it.

My brother in law has a win 7 64bit OEM and he said he has been able to load Win 10 on 2 PC's by using that win 7 dvd? He said he had to go to automated activation to do the 2nd install (On his wifes PC).

I was under the impression that the Win 7 key could not be used again even after you have used it to upgrade? Is he telling porkies?

These things are supposed to be only for ONE PC. So even if he managed to fiddle it somehow, it's a bit naughty really.

Win 7->Win 10 update "uses" up the 7 key - however IIRC you can roll back for a limited time so it will still activate for the duration of that I believe but once that period has past the 7 key will no longer activate.

Ok, i see. Looks like he has been lucky then!

I might be wrong on that as I've not actually looked it up but I think that is how it works :S the intention is that you can only have 1 PC active however with the license not use 7 on one and 10 on another.

his breaking the license. so technically his not licensed

When he had to do the phone activation on the second install, the automated voice on the phone asks how many PCs this Windows licence is currently installed on. He must have answered that it was currently installed on no PCs for the second one to activate, otherwise it tells you they cannot activate it on the second PC.

Naughty, and definitely something I strongly advice against to any of my friends/family (for the sake of a new copy of Windows, why bother risking the trouble/hassle?) but I seriously doubt he's on his own on doing this!

Yes, I am sure u are right. Only once I ever used a cough version and that was in xp days!! I feel happier having a 'proper' version. Doesn't cost a lot and can last years!!

And you don't have to worry about the risk of malware included with 3rd party activators or pre-activated ISOs.

I bought several copies of Windows 8 Pro when it was released for £15 each, saw me through 8.1 and now on to 10.
