Windows 10

Its definately the HDDs.

The last build didn't complete in over 24 hours. I killed it and then went into multiple boot loops and Recovery loops that all fell over. Eventually I pulled the drives and pop, straight into Windows.

Same this time, it took hours to get to 23%, so I killed it, pulled the drives, pop straight in in 10 minutes, but then when I reconected the drives it refused to see them, and hung Disk Management when trying to see what was up.

Strangely, if I took them out and put them in a USB caddy they were picked up fine.

So I've retired them and bought the SSD I was putting off buying instead. All is well now, and I am not free of rotating disks entirely.

They were really old drives, formatted in MBR, and would have at some point had an OS installed on them so likely had a mess of Boot Records and all sorts scattered all over them. One of them (a 320GB) would have been my primary drive back when I was running XP!!

Hey guys, making my MS bootable usb to reinstall win10, noticed that 10pro isnt available in the drop down menu, so off to google i go and read that it will install 10 and i can 'upgrade' to 10 pro at some point in the install. Is this the typical way to install pro or can i just do it with a pro iso and rufus instead? Apologies as im sure this has been asked a billion times already!

I can't remember where, but I remember a tool for Windows 8 and 10 that allowed you to change the colours of windows and taskbars. It only had two sliders, but it was enough so I could fine tune the colours to exactly how I wanted them - not some excuse for a colour palette that looks like it was designed only for children!

I'm sure the tool was posted on OcUK, but I can't see it. :(
I managed to find the tool in the end - tucked away in the downloads folder! :o

In case anybody else wants to know what the tool was called, it was called Windows 10 color control. The colour you choose doesn't come out the same, but it's workable with a lot of patience.

Does anyone know of a way, outside of an (paid) application, to get the icons pinnable to secondary and tertiary monitors?

I can't see why this basic sort of functionality wasn't included!

Normal desktop icons or start menu icons?

I have four monitors and my recycle bin is right at the top of my top monitor and never moves (unless I switch the top monitor input to my projector)

But normal day to day use it doesn't move.

And I think I did was remove the icon grid and fired it up there.

Taskbar icons I should have said, sorry.

So for example at the moment I have the "Main taskbar and taskbar where window is open" selected, as it enables me to have the icons clickable after pinning, but they open on different monitors.

Eg the main monitor (middle) has Visual Studio, but the left monitor has all my VM stuff on it, and the right has chrome/steam/slack etc but the icons are only there when the application is open. Whereas I want the VMware/System Centre icon pinnable on my left monitor, steam/slack/etc pinnable on my right monitor, and so on.

I've been doing some Googling but can't find much solid info. I understand later builds of Windows 10 let you install using a Windows 7 or 8 key, without having to upgrade and then do a clean install.

If I download a new image using the MS tool, could I install it with a Windows 7 HP OEM key? (the chap who's computer I'm fixing purchased it online recently and hasn't used it before).

Thanks.

No it's not new.

Weird - I've never had it on any of my systems before I did a load of updates today - was one of the first things I noticed.

That and between the last time I shut it down and today my tablet managed to lose half of its start menu items :S

The right-click menu or the main start menu? I think the "power" item in the main menu was added in 1511 or one of the earlier patches, but either way it's been there for a while.

The main start menu - the power option for shutting down has always been there - but I've never seen the additional entries before with updates pending the options on one system are:

Update and shut down
Shut down
Update and restart
Restart

While another system for some reason has:

Close
Update and shut down
Update and restart
Sleep

Which is a bit messed up (might be a bug) :S not sure why there is even a close entry and the lack of ability to bypass the updates is even sillier as that is a mobile device whereas the desktop (VM) has a wider range of options.

EDIT: On restarting that system its showing proper entries (atleast while there isn't an update now pending).

Easiest way is the yellow folder already pinned to the taskbar. By default it opens to recent files, but just open it, then click File > Change Folder and Search Options > Change "Open File Explorer to:" to This PC and OK back out. :)

Just wanted to say thank you for this, makes usage easier for sure :)

OK after getting Windows 10 upgraded as I mentioned before , I was looking through my Operating System SSD and I noticed a folder named " Windows Old" ...should I keep that..or delete it ?...it's about 28 GBs

I should say that the upgrade was done from the icon i have been getting for months.

thanx

I noticed that too! I assumed that was a backup of the previous OS?

I'd hoped after the month trial period it would be automatically removed?
