Windows 10

Yesterday i tried upgrading my second pc to W10. First by direct update , that failed. Then downloaded the .iso and that worked.

Now to the problem and question.

I control the pc with a remote control using imon software which does not have W10 drivers so most of the buttons do not work. Reinstalled W7 and everything is fine again.

Now that the pc has already had W10 on it, would i still get the free activation if i reinstall W10 after the July deadline?

Sorry if this has been answered before.

Hi Guys

NOD32 keeps showing my windows updates it requires and I hit accept and it goes away then a day later the same ones are back again? Been going on for weeks, anyway to force the updates to install?

Cheers

Mart

is there a version of windows10 where you can turn off all updates?
a business version or something?
ive been searching google but cant find anything useful

there's the "Using Group Policy Editor" but does that work 100%?

any tips appreciated >.<

I tried clean installing Windows 10 when I recieved my new ssd a few days ago. At the "where do you want to install windows" stage, after clearing everything to create unallocated space all I got was "windows cannot be installed on drive0" and I could not click next to advance :( Any ideas what the issue was? I had no other drives connected.

I ended up just cloning my Win7 hdd to the ssd :(

There is 3rd party software that will mostly stop updates but its not an ideal solution - you can mess about with GPE and registry hacks, etc. but it kind of leaves you in a silly situation where you need to do a lot of messing about when you actually need to update and/or leaves you more vulnerable than necessary between times.

I have turned automatic updates off via the GPE on Win 10 Pro, you still get warnings when there are updates but I install them when I want.

I have used this setting since 10 was released and it's been great for me this way. When you do check for updates manually once you change this setting you will see in red "Some settings are managed by your organisation", doesn't affect anything though.

If you open the group policy editor and follow this.

okay thx guys think ill give that GPE a try
i have a windows box i need always on, not reboot when it feels like it (yes i know you can delay that reboot but still not cool)
i thought there was a business version you could turn it off in too but maybe not :(

maybe something like a windows server version might be better i duno

Oh **** you microsoft. After reading you could hack windows media centre to work in 10, I decided to give it a go. Of course I forgot that windows 10 supports flac so it's updated tags on over half of my files without even asking me.

I can restore files from backup and disable future updates but that sort of behaviour really is abhorrent.

Just took the plunge and decided to upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10 today.

First impressions are quite positive, which is strange for me as I generally dislike change

Tested everything out and everything seems to be working well. Only real niggle is the blank screen that replaces the desktop image when the screensaver kicks in.

Hi guys,

I've just made a new build for my Dad with a Windows 7 licence and after the initial install I ran the Windows 10 disc I've made and upgraded the machine to 10. Fine so far, but I like a fresh install so I re-ran the disc and installed from boot. Now I keep being prompted for the Windows 10 key during installation? Is this alright, is it going to activate once back in desktop?

I'm pretty sure I did something similar with a Windows 8 machine a while back and I wasn't prompted once... it wouldn't be anything to do with the lack of an internet connection would it? I've had to unplug temporarily.

Thanks.

I am pretty sure that Windows would require an active internet connection to check the key etc, so it would be better to have this 'plugged in'.

You will also need this of course for the initial updates.

Just upgraded my Dell Inspiron 17 ( 7737 ) with Windows 10 and Crucial BX200 240GB SATA 6Gbps 2.5" Internal SSD • 540 MB/s Read / 490 MB/s Write , can`t believe how fast it is , about 10 seconds to desktop might be less then that :D

Just did an update to 14291 and it has reset the Windows update sharing setting to sharing over the internet as well as LAN for some reason :S

Update to 14291 here and not had this problem, however I've had 3 blue screens in one day for no reason... never had any before.

I had issues with windows 10 today... couldn't open start menu and it ran like ****e... had to do a fresh reinstall and then couldn't install on the SSD due to windows cannot be installed on drive0 ********.. got around that and back up and running now...

Whats the main cause of this then?

Get-AppxPackage | Remove-AppxPackage
Get-AppxProvisionedPackage -Online | Remove-AppxProvisionedPackage -online

Nice elevated PowerShell command to remove all the crap Windows 10 apps.
