Windows 10

I've been pestered for the Creators Update for weeks now, the time finally came where it wouldn't allow me to "think" about upgrading and I had to agree to it. couldn't even ctrl+alt+del to end the task any more which worked for a few days :D

It made me wonder when the ctrl+alt+del trick didn't work anymore...

On the plus side I haven't noticed a difference, after turning off/uninstalling features I don't want and doing a reg tweak to remove the OneDrive icon.
 
Wait what - so they won't get pushed updates beyond a certain point? that kind of curb stomps some of the arguments some were making earlier in the thread in defence of forced automatic updates.

Now I have 140 background processes running instead of my 75 after that huge update.. Are other peoples the same after the update?
 
I reinstalled Win10 a few days ago without issue. A couple of hours ago I shrunk my C drive and created a new 200GB partition on the same ssd disk.

All seems fine but when I launched file explorer the first time after a reboot, a notification popped up in the bottom right and dissappeared instantly before I could see what it said. I did so again after another reboot but nothing since. Event Viewer doesn't show anything and there isn't a notification history in windows 10 as far as I know. Wondering what the heck it was and if there is an issue.
 
Has anybody else had a hard time getting file-sharing between machines to work nicely?

Is there a way to completely disable the whole "homegroup" thing, as I don't want to manage sharing that way I just want to use regular network shares. The weird thing though, is that when both our main PCs are active, they both appear to think a Homegroup already exists, but it's named after a *previous* installation (different machine name). The option to leave the homegroup isn't available. When only one of the two is active, it thinks no homegroup exists and has the option of creating one. I've Googled for solutions and tried various things but the behaviour persists. In the end I just disabled the Homegroup related services (hopefully they stay disabled)... Since doing that shares seem to be more or less working but the whole thing has been a complete ball-ache, I'm sure it never used to be this bad

Thanks! These do all sound like things I've tried but perhaps I didn't quite get the sequence of events right - I'll give it another go...

Having said that I did eventually get sharing working without the homegroup by just right clicking on folders I wanted to share, setting the permissions for sharing and then connecting to the other machine by putting things like "//RUFUS-PC/" into the address bar... So I'm tempted to simply force the Homegroup services to not run and forget they even exist!

Hold up... this is pretty crazy but last night I did as I described above (disabled the 2 homegroup services)... this stops the "homegroup" section from appearing in the file browser and simply gets rid of it, which is what I wanted. But then I noticed something, Steam was totally screwed up by it, the store page wouldn't load and generally the whole application was borderline unresponsive (I could occasionally get a response from clicking things but it wasn't normal)... The second I re-enabled and re-started the Homegroup services, it starts working again... So Steam is somehow making use of the homegroup? (maybe for family sharing?)... I wonder if that might be related to the problem with the "phantom homegroup" (if Steam had previously been sharing with the old machine)
 
So my Windows 10 now has that creators update in it, thing is is that windows defender keeps comming up when I boot my PC up , I dont use defender ( I never do, always have it off ) so is there a way to not have it on the start up ?

because like windows movie maker which was removed they were basics of windows and useful.windows movie maker for eg was the most used video editing program ever.you cant find something that does exactly the same for free either. i know i used every prog under the sun.
 
What is Windows 10 doing that causes lots of packet collisions on bootup but this doesn't happen under Windows 7 with the same Ethernet...
 
Is it configured to share updates locally?

Also could be some local media sharing type stuff - if I start up any of my Windows 8 or 10 devices it immediately triggers my NAS into powering up while the 7 ones don't.
 
No, shared updates are off. File and media sharing is off. Each restart will trigger several hundreds of packet collisions to the router.
