Windows 10

Well I have installed malware bytes so I'm actually doing the same anyway lol!

That's what I will stick to then for now and wait to see how Windows Defender performs based on reviews etc in the coming months.

It's just annoying you can't schedule scans on the free version of MB :(

Tbh after testing and playing with malwarebytes it's worth every ounce of the money...and I'm a tight ass with software...the realtime scanning is amazing and website blocking is the nuts.

19 quid for 3 machines for a year...that's good value compared to a mobile phone or Sky TV contract !

It's a few beers !

Start menu > settings > system > default apps,
Also in there at the bottom is choose default app by file type, choose default app by protocol and set default apps.

So if browser is set as chrome default. Then look under protocol for http and https and make sure they are chrome as well.

Is Windows Defender a good enough standalone Antivirus? I've always used AVG but is it time to move on?

Thanks :)

I can't comment on improvements to Defender made for Windows 10 but PC Pro (now merged with Alphr) did a round up back in June of 2015 security suites and it didn't fair particularly well.

The article is here - http://www.alphr.com/microsoft/microsoft-security-essentials

PC PRO said:
The problem is that Security Essentials can’t offer real peace of mind. ...in our tests Microsoft Security Essentials was still compromised by 32% of threats.
We wouldn't trust our PCs and our data to Security Essentials - and frankly, neither should you.

I use Kaspersky and get it free every year just for having a Barclays account but would pay something a year for the peace of mind it brings me, I know it won't stop everything.

They rate AVG okay, Avast seemed to do great and I don't think quite as ad heavy as AVG so maybe give that a try, and it's still free.

Defender has improved however the free well known ones score higher in testing,https://www.av-test.org/en/antivirus/home-windows/ here at also at AV comparatives http://chart.av-comparatives.org/chart1.php

Also resource/performance usage http://www.av-comparatives.org/performance-tests/ ,Avast came out top in that one.

Probably be a few months before we see Win10 AV results.

Love reading these av reviews...some miss bit defender completely and others have avast at the top of the list...

Hmmm...

I'm not saying that defender is good on its own.. But alongside malwarebytes it's great

Upgraded from 8.1 to win 10 last night and today i have to format as i downloaded some rar files and all where unable to open all corrupt so windows 10 made a mess.theres too many bugs in win 10 so will wait for a decent bug free or nearly bug free win 10

I'm using 7 ZIP with no issues on Win10,everything from zipped files to gaming has so far been very solid, IMHO it's quite polished for its very first week.

Well my PC is refusing to download the upgrade to Win 10 Pro, even after deleting the contents of the update data folder and forcing it to try again via CMD.

I guess that answers that, I'll stick with Windows 7 Pro... :p
