Windows 10

I have a few questions about Windows 10 (Sorry if these have been asked and answered but 278 pages is a lot to trawl through!)
Thanks...

1) How do you "trigger" the download? - I signed up a couple of months ago when the little Windows logo popped up in my task bar but I can't see anywhere to start the process!?!?

Start CMD under Admin; run this: wuauclt.exe /updatenow

2) Will I be able to go back to my retail copy of Windows 7 if I don't like it?

Yes providing it is within 1 year. :)

3) Did I read somewhere that they have removed Windows Media Centre/Player? (if so, can you download it separately or is it "gone"?)

Media Player is there, Centre isn't. :( I used Media Centre quite often, but meh!

I hope this helps!

1) Use the link from the Windows website/ the media creation tool to download it directly. The automatic upgrades through the Get Windows 10 program is being done in waves according to hardware.

2) Yes, for 30 days, so long as you don't remove the old Windows files through Disk Cleanup.

3) Media Centre was removed in 8 (although available as an addon to the Pro versions). Media Player is still there. There is also a new app called Groove Music which is Microsoft's version of iTunes.

1. use the Microsoft tool to download the requires ISO of W10 or create a USB stick. once done run the setup.exe and this will start off the upgrade.

2. Yes, you can go back if you don't like W10

3. I haven't checked W10 this but you can download something like VLC player (did this with windows 8.1)

Apparently it's something to do with my system then, as I just it on a i3 system and it installed first time...I can't even take my NVidia card out as it doesnt have onboard vga on the mobo :@

Going to try and update my 8 year old daughters Netbook. It has 2gig ram and is running Win 7 Starter. Atom CPU but worth a punt. Nothing to lose. Will report back as to how it goes.

It works fine on my X205TA, which is an Intel Atom Z3735 with 2GB of ram. Better than 8.1 32bit, so I think you'll be surprised.

Im assuming other people are having issues, keep getting to the higher % when upgrading then saying "oops something happened"

Can I not just download the ISO image and do it that way? only problem is then how am I going to activate it, do I really have to go through this upgrade thing?

Yes. See the first post of the FAQ thread for download links. Just run the ISO and setup from within Windows and it'll upgrade.

I appreciate the replies guys but this in particular is a deal breaker for me - I want to try W10 but I don't want to lose my properly purchased retail copy of Windows 7 in the process!?!?!

Then upgrade, try for 30 days then roll back.

Or ask a lovely friend if they happen to have a spare coa somewhere :p

The 30 days limit is for rolling back the installation of 10 after you've upgraded. If you upgrade and then do a clean install like many people here, this doesn't apply.

The year limit is something that remains to be seen, as to whether Windows 7/8/8.1 keys are permanently converted into Windows 10 keys. It appears that they're still working at the moment as people here have gone back to 7 or 8. It either activates automatically with the old key or you need to ring the activation phone line like before when changing hardware or with an OEM key.

Iv gone with an 32 bit version on my old dual core dell machine, dont really intend on sticking anymore than the 4gb sticks in this one.

I dont really want to use my 64 bit key yet as they will be for any forthcoming builds

Anyone had issues with Office 2013 since upgrading. specifically outlook? Mine seems very fussing about sending mail now, preferring to keep things in the outbox. grr
