Windows 10

*edit*

From what I've been reading on the subject, have I got this right? If I want to do a clean install of W10, I need to:

Complete the upgrade from W8.1 to W10

Then I can install W10 cleanly...so basically installing it twice. Is that right?

Correct

100% correct as the post above me states.

The key is registered online with msft so there are no issues with completely wiping your system drive for a fresh install :)

Ah ha, OK thanks, I'm getting somewhere!

So I'm looking at downloading W10 to a DVD/USB from the link here.

It says:
If you are installing the operating system for the first time, you will need your Windows product key

Is that the Windows 8.1 key I already have? Or when I upgrade to 10 does it give me a product key? Or does it generate a key based on the hardware in the machine (I've read something to that effect).

I will be switching off all the sharing with Microsoft stuff as per the RockPaperShotgun advice here.

Will that mean I can still get access to a key if I'm not using an online Microsoft account?

Yes, I really am trying to account for any possible problem before I upgrade! :D

Thanks!

Basically:

Upgrade from whatever OS to windows 10 and ensure its activated first
Next do a clean install but during that clean install where it asks for a key - SKIP that section
When the fresh install is done - activate

I don't think it matters at all if you are on a local or Microsoft account as apparently its linked online between msft and something in your mobo.

Woke the pc from sleep and was typing in steam and all of a sudden i couldnt type anymore. The mouse worked ok but i couldnt type in chrome either. Had to reboot. Reboot was stuck rebooting message so had to reboot with button on pc. :(

Its really not very nice this new windows 10. I dont like the ui, the slow booting of apps in the background which is why u get a ssd (far faster loading stuff in win 7).

Reverting back to win 7 later tonight or in the morning i think. Not a pleasant experience at all.

Upgrade or clean install?

Upgrade, but the ui wouldnt improve with a clean install anyhow, nor would start menu being rubbish compared to win 7 one, using classic shell cos of it not showing stuff i had installed properly or easy access to control panel like im used to. Also various other things like xpadder not working and needed updating, display fusion needing latest beta for to fix the white taskbar issue on 2nd mon. Lots of little things adding up.

Im happy others like win 10 but for me personally its not for me, win 7 still wins for speed, ui and easy access to stuff. Win 10 might be nice for new customers more than serious pc users who are used to win 7 and just fancied a bit of a polish update and dx12.

I mean heck when i first tried playing music on foobar it was access denied. Found out that my music folder was blocked and had to unblock it for admin access. Wtf is up with that. Oh and i had to reinstall winrar cos i couldnt zip stuff up. Worms armageddon was sloppy in fps had to switch to dx9 shader mode instead of direct draw 32bit mode, which worms usually ran fine with on win7. If that game had issues in direct draw, i wonder if i have any other games that use direct draw that will have issues.

i would say a serious pc users would be able to adopted new things and enjoy finding new ways, etc.

Yet they call this a "techie" forum.

yes and??

he saying Win 10 might be nice for new customers more than serious pc users who are used to win 7.

but if he is a serious pc user then surely he knows that he may need updated drivers/updates for software, fix little issues etc when upgrading to a new OS and or do clean install

i wouldn't class a norm pc user knowing that or doing it.

I had the reboot issue which meant I had to format my entire PC just to get it to boot again. Windows Update caused the reboot issue somehow. I'm only sticking with W10 because I'll want DX12 in the coming months and might aswell get use to it, shame as this is decent but just buggy.

One of the recent Windows updates is plagued with reboot loops for a lot of people. Never saw that coming with do not install updates, Microsoft. ¬¬

Apologies if this has been asked before. I did a search but found nothing to answer my question. So I installed W10 using a clean install and then fired up gpedit and changed the Windows update setting to 'Notify to download and Notify to install'. I then fired up settings and clicked 'check for updates'. It was taking a while so I left it and when I came back if had installed updates. I thought the whole point of notify is to give me control to choose what updates I want or have I misunderstood the new update model from Microsoft? I also have the option to disbale Windows updates in gpedit but I am afraid this will have the same effect of installing updates without my permission.

You cannot disable Windows Updates in non Enterprise versions of Windows 10. You can just defer them in Pro.

The settings your changing are having no effect.

I find it strange that everyone seems to be happy with windows 10. Is it just because its new and you like new things or do you want to sidestep the changes that have happened compared to win 7. And the issues that pop up, do you just go "meh they will fix em" or are you annoyed since it should have been good from the get go otherwise why release it when it isnt fully stable yet, i dont believe win 7 when it came out was that much of a issue with bugs etc. Just to me, dx12 might be the big draw and ppl are just forgiving ms for a lot of stuff just to have it on their pcs.

I mean i didnt want win 10 but i gave it a go so i can say it for myself that im not fond of it and prefer win 7 as there was nothing wrong with it at all just lacking dx12 which isnt needed yet really. I was hoping for something i might have liked and stayed with but im of the camp "why change what wasnt broke" mentality.

What really is it that makes win 10 better than 7. For me nothing so far. Not 1 thing it does better than 7 and actually steps back in a few areas.

I mean i see skeeter posting positive stuff for win 10 in these forums and aggressively defending everything about it. But why. What makes you like it so much and defend it like you do. If its about win 10 on tablets or other devices then i cant say much as i only have a PC to think about and is what im concerned with.

Well its not new to me, I've been using it for 6 months or more, so theres no "oooh shiny new thing" in it for me.

But that aside, Windows 10 has some massive issues, so I'm hardly defending it blindly. However your original post included a load of issues of which all but one (your dislike of the UI) would be fixed by performing a clean install rather than sticking with the upgrade. But you then dismissed that, and shifted your complaints to other areas in order to continue having a go. So I'd say the 'aggressive' part is on the side of the attackers rather than the defenders.
