Windows 10

Thanks linktoinsanity, much appreciated. I thought cut off was this July for upgrading, or is that for those who havent tried win 10 yet? Thanks.

That's on hardware without it installed yet. The hardware ID should be stored at MS's end now when it comes to reinstalling. :)

Infact you should not even need the product key now, thinking about it.

What do you mean? Latest drivers support 6 and 7 series under Win 10.
Andi.

Don't confuse 6 and 7 series for 600 and 700 series cards.

GeForce 6 and 7 series cards only have support up to windows 8.1 which was pretty much confirmed by my fathers computer which had a 6600LE installed and the get windows 10 app in windows 8.1 stated that the computer couldn't be upgraded to windows 10 because there was no driver support for that graphics card (something I had to fix by upgrading the graphics card to a GT610 even though it hasn't fixed the message in the app which I'm likely going to have to bypass by using either the media creation tool or the windows 10 DVD I created to try to bypass the compatibility information)

It is odd though since the ATI (now AMD) mobility Radeon 4250 in my laptop has no windows 10 drivers, but is confirmed as windows 10 compatible by the app (the AMD drivers don't even work in my laptop since it can't even detect the GPU properly).

As I said really ancient hardware, 10 years or so.
I think you can install W10 using the media creation tool then update display drivers using an older version possibly for W7 or W8.1.
Andi.

Extract the drivers and install them manually rather than relying on the installer.

I think the only thing we've got which I can't find drivers for is an old AC97 Realtek codec for quite an obscure version of the chip used on an Intel motherboard for a CPU which isn't even 64-bit (a 2004 Pentium 4 Prescott!). Everything else has Windows 10 installed and drivers are either installed manually or through Windows Update, including the former terror that is AMD's old mobile driver system.

Most of the hardware issues I've encountered have been peripherals rather than the base hardware - fair few more obscure printer/scanner/fax combinations that work fine under 7 but point blank refuse to work/work properly under 10 and unlikely to get updated drivers/support software or have updated software but missing many features from the 7 version that people rely on.

I got 2 questions about w10.

1/i like games and ideally to use dx12 I need to upgrade even tho I dont want.
I am using a volume licence w7 but I will buy like oem sticker from ebay for 10 quid and activate on my pc (over the phone) and then do update to win 10 and then clean reinstall. I this possible ? I think it should be possible. Can I get iso of win 10 ?

2/ At work we have about 70 win 7 pc'c and I have been told to update them before the 26th, any ideas how to go around this to do this quick ? Can I download the iso or do I need to go trough the windows update process ?

I have only bit of knowledge of the win 10 but how does it store licence info ? I assume if i upgrade Mobo on my pc I will have to get a new licence of win 10 ?

I just tried to update to 10, but it failed. Hopefully second time lucky. I should have taken a screenshot (will do next time if it goes mammaries up, which I expect it to do).

Edit: turned off Windows Defender / also my own anti-virus = success. Let's see how 10 performs now since I last used it!

Upgraded to Insider Preview 14379, and FINALLY (it seems) it isn't overwriting the drivers I want to be there from Windows Update. Hopefully that issue is fixed now.

mail app problem

im suddenly having a problem with the w10 mail app. its worked fine since install now suddenly i cannot access any links in an email that i receive. if i clik a link on any email within the app then i get a popup with an error message telling me it is unable to open. my mail is configured to sky email corrctly and like i said it has been working fine. this has been going on for the last week. i run kaspersky for security and that is also not giving any warnings. all the emails open and can be used fine on other devices or if i access them using my web browser instead. anyone else having this prob or know what i can do???

Just noticed I can't see my D drive / optical drive. Are they automatically hidden?

Weird. Restarted and D drive was there.

Do I need to download driver update for the optical, though?

I still buy CDs so need an optical drive to rip them. But I do think anyone who writes to CD/DVD is a chump. :p

And no, you don't need any drivers.

Does anyone have blue screens at boot complaining about a system thread exception? Happens from cold boot. (latest fast ring insider preview).

SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M (1000007e)
This is a very common bugcheck. Usually the exception address pinpoints
the driver/function that caused the problem. Always note this address
as well as the link date of the driver/image that contains this address.
Some common problems are exception code 0x80000003. This means a hard
coded breakpoint or assertion was hit, but this system was booted
/NODEBUG. This is not supposed to happen as developers should never have
hardcoded breakpoints in retail code, but ...

If this happens, make sure a debugger gets connected, and the
system is booted /DEBUG. This will let us see why this breakpoint is
happening.
Arguments:
Arg1: c0000005, The exception code that was not handled
Arg2: 81ce22f0, The address that the exception occurred at
Arg3: 8f493b38, Exception Record Address
Arg4: 8f493700, Context Record Address

lol. Mind you, it is the insider preview.

And no, you don't need any drivers.

It's not a bad idea for use in my car, for example. No aux input on the stereo but it will play MP3s.

So I rip, encode and burn for playback. It means rather than 10 songs per CD I can have a couple hundred.

Whats an optical drive? ;)

Seriously though... I burned one only the other day... 3 in fact when a PC I was trying to install Linux onto, would not boot from USB.

To be fair, my main PC has 3 DVDRW Drives and they needed a workout so I burned all 3 at once just for ol' times sake!

What really gets me, is the number of manuals for top or the range up to date Motherboards that run you through instructions on installing to AHCI/RAID and then talk about installing the drivers from floppy! - now thats just silly... Why not offer to install from C-15 tapes instead while were at it?
