Valid points raised - I've noticed explorer crashing quite often since upgrading to Windows 10. Like I said, hopefully an SSD will solve a lot of the issues.

Might upgrade the RAM too if I see a BSOD again, or the weird issue of randomly deciding not to boot up until I unscrew the rear casing off and threaten it! (I'm not joking)

I've not seen explorer crash that often but it certainly struggles in 10 in some cases - if its crashing a lot then likely to be a hardware or device driver issue.

Should I care? It's only a Beta isn't it, and won't Windows update automatically?
But no, SSD arriving tomorrow, going abroad for 2 weeks on Tuesday.

Its the shipping version of Anniversary update and yes it will update automatically but if you are having serious problems a clean install is always advisable.

I quite liked Windows 10 after I got rid of all the bloatware except I had a problem with the last update and it kep trying and failing to complete the update, so I rolled back to Windows 7, but will probably buy it later in the year when I build a new system.
My question is where do I have to look for all the temporary files it must have put on my hdd to install v.10, so I can reclaim all the disc space

That is one of the problems with disabling features, etc. you don't like especially if you need to use 3rd party software or registry edits, etc. in Windows 10 due to the way its constantly changing it can cause issues with future updates and so on.

I just turned features off in the menus, didnt use anything to edit the registry or third party programmes

Ah seen a few issues with "hacks" used to disable features but merely turning them on and off in the control panel wouldn't/shouldn't break anything like that.

Is windows 10 a lot smaller than 8.1?

Prior to the upgrade (which I ran over the weekend) I had 126gb free (on 250gb ssd), now I have 119gb with 18gb in my windows.old folder. So I'll be netting 11gb free space when that goes?

It's just a clean OS vs one that has a couple of years worth of updates installed.

If you had a clean install of 8.1 and didn't run windows update, there wouldn't be much in it.

That's interesting. I knew driver updates could accumulate if you weren't careful, didn't know windows itself would balloon to that extent,; over 10gb.

Hi guys, I just did a clean install on my laptop by booting to USB installation media. I selected CUSTOM install and did it from scratch deleting previous partition of win 7. At no point during install did I get prompted to activate or use a product key. I did join my wireless network during setup and when the install finished I went into Windows and checked and it states Windows is activated.

Can it be that simple? I thought it would ask me to enter my win 7 key if I did it the above way.

No, DistributedCOM seems to be the worst offender.

Wow, I'm surprised that there are still this many problems with Windows 10 even a full year after launch! Good to know though, and thanks again OCUK for saving me from headaches and pain when I should be gaming.

My priority is stability so I will have to stay on Windows 7, in fairness to MS, they got it right with W7, most stable OS I have ever used. If it ain't broke...
