Windows 7 Impressions

Anyone noticed the search bar won't work in Firefox 3.0.5? I can type into it, and suggestions pop up as usual, but neither pressing enter nor clicking a suggestion with the mouse loads a Google search page (or any other search provider) :(

AWPC - why on earth did you install a beta OS? You seem to be utterly clueless to what it entails. MS don't give away their retail quality OS's, it is a public beta TEST. Do you know what beta actually means in this context? Your posts suggest you don't.

No issues with it here.

You've totally hit the nail on the head there. Anyone who's bitched about Vista, and then suddenly says how great Windows 7 is, is effectively admitting that they just rubbished Vista for the sake of it as there is no difference performance wise between the 2 OSes. It will certainly discredit an awful lot of people, and I can't wait to see them eat their own words :)

Whilst I agree with you about it being ridiculous to bitch about Vista and then say 7 is amazing, there is definitely a performance difference. It wasn't obvious on my Q6600 machine, but on my laptop with 1.5GB RAM and a slow hard drive there was, and running in a VM with 1GB RAM there is a big difference. 7 deals with slower systems much better than Vista does - on the laptop, Vista can be a bit sluggish, where I'd say that 7 is pretty much on a par with XP in terms of speed.

Just reinstalled this again and going to give it another bash.

Before i start messing about with GPU drivers again can someone that's using a rig similar to mine, especially if the same GPU, which driver they installed first ie beta or normal 8.12 and whether they removed the generic one in W7 before they did? On the last install of this OS i couldn't get the Ati driver in at all so don't fancy goin through all that palava again on this install.

Regarding performance differences; I definitely think it's faster and more 'optimised' than Vista. You only have to read around the net to see how many people have 7 running on Pentium 3 and 4 chips with 512MB RAM. One guy on a forum I frequent has a P3 with 512MB ram and he says 7 genuinely runs better and faster than the XP he just replaced it with! Vista was too slow to use, as was Ubuntu, on that rig.

Win7 on netbooks and lower end hardware will be interesting to see. The more people test it the more we'll discover I suppose :) I've also noticed 100 KB/sec more throughput on Usenet and FTP transfers, and web pages seem to load and render quicker (on Firefox as well as IE). Definitely a step up imho.

Installed first time on my Dell Dimension E521 and found all hardware without issue - though nothing special in it.
Only minors issues so far:
Went into sleep mode but after waking up from power button usb mouse and keyboard failed to respond.
Sny Erricson PC sync software not compatible - but sure to be sorted for actual release.

Installed my D-Link wireless USB straight off too!

Would really love to try some 'sensors' and touch hardware now as these seems to be the major addition.

One note. If anyone has issues installing printers as no driver listed, do use the Windwos Update option. It loads a whole host of extra printers.

Installation on HP Pavilion laptop also went generally smoothly. Had to pull nvidia graphics driver off Windows Update (automatic after first boot) and manual install of nvidia chipset driver using Vista drivers.

Don't install the one from windows update, use the website one and it should install first time. I found if you install the windows update first, you cant install the newer one from ATI.

What about the one that gets put in on install? Install over it or remove it?

I hate asking these questions, usually i just erradicate any sign of previous drivers before updating them but the Ati driver caused me so much headache last night on W7.

Edit - Ignore that, went ahead and installed the beta drivers straight over the generic ones that W7 put in on the inital install of the OS and it worked perfect this time. Weird that i had to reformat to get any drivers on.

I'm going to be controversial and say I prefer vista.

This is literally the same except stuff has moved around. I can't handle the fact that the open window is highlighted bright blue at the bottom, its really distracting while reading the page.

If I were to partition my hard drive, and install this the new partition, how would I then 'uninstall' the OS, merge the partition back to the original without (hopefully) loosing any data, and without having to do a complete reinstall of XP?

Been using it all evening and other than the taskbar it looks and feels no different to Vista imo. That's not a bad thing as I quite like Vista.

Seems to be the people with slower systems that'll get the most benefit out of this.
