Windows 7

Reading an interview somewhere the other day, they said that Windows 7 will NOT feature the classic taskbar, now I've taken that to mean that all variants of 7, even if branded as something else and in reality being Server xxxx will not have it.

It'll be released in 2009, certainly wont be waiting untill 2011.

I dont think it will massively change from what it is now, usually what the open beta's are like is what the finished article will be like, at least it was with Vista, and pre beta is what people have now and the Beta is not far away (December)

but remember MS often change thier mind on date of release that happen to Vista that took so long to wait so find out after Xmas if it correct or not. Maybe MS put something to add to change in OS and hold the release date to move forward that may happen so find out in 4-6 month time.

This is unlikely to happen with a maintenance release.

I'd put large sums of money on them not 'candyfying' the server interface. With Windows 2008 they've gone to great lengths to make the OS as powerful as it can be by trimming out the fluff. They're not going to go and throw it all back in again.

Actually, I was wrong before.

There will be no "new" version of Server, rather there will be the R2 refresh of '08.

Had a play with this with the features unlocked and tbh I prefer vista currently - the new taskbar is horrible to use for me :(

I personally love vista, i have no issues with it so windows 7 is fixing something that for me aint broke!

Could this be officially the first "Vista is great, no way I'm using Windows 7*" post!? :) :) :)

*yes i know that's not exactly what you said but it's more amusing this way ;)

No, that would be my post that said Vista Sucks, Windows 7 Sucks, I'm using Server 08 and then Server 08 R2 :)

Server '08 -> What Longhorn SHOULD have been

You don't think the above though surely as Vista and Windows 7 does not suck, not to mention Windows 7 is faster than Server 2008 here as well.

Has it been confirmed the server edition will use the new taskbar?

Even if it does it won't be "eye candy"'ish. Windows Server will always (at least in the forseeable future and that includes the vNext) operate without the desktop compositor i.e. eye candy.

It isn't. At least not by default.

Server 2008 uses a Windows Classic a.k.a. "battleship grey" type theme by default.

Yea I know, but on some websites it shows you how to enable it, and it is not by adding any files, so why did Microsoft feel the need to keep the Aero theme there?

AFAIK it copies the required files from the installation disc or installation folder.

It is part of a larger package called "Desktop Experience" which installs a number of client features from Vista.

Hmmm, I don't understand, so when Server 2008 is installed, the installation folder is always on the C drive right? So that must be where it comes from?

Just the only reason you would need desktop experience is if you wanted to put Server 2008 on a desktop?, like everyone does as it has become popular for people using it on their normal computers now for apparent better gaming and 3dmark performance.

I won't be using Windows 7 then, in fact I'll continue to stick with XP. The 'old' taskbar works perfectly and these new changes are for change's sake only, something different to try and justify the existence of another Windows release. Much like many of the 'features' in Vista which were a step backwards from XP.
