** WINDOWS 8.1 IS HERE - HELLO START BUTTON **

8.1 improves on 8 nicely. I like how typing in the start menu now reveals ALL options immediately under the search field. Better than segregating into Apps/Settings/Documents etc

I don't use the start button and would rather be able to turn it off . But at least it is small and unobtrusive.

Took an age to install as an update on 8, longer than the full 8 installation!

Just got my Windows 8.1 LE (Legacy Edition) delivered, should be finished installing by next weekend :D

Snip

So that is where the world remaining supply of Floppy disks have gone :D:D

I feel sorry for the poor person who has to sit there and install windows from them.

Someone tell me why the new "Start button" goes green and black when I hover over it
How ridiculous does this look?! For the price they charge where is the attention to detail?

Installed win 8.1 yesterday. Spent a few hours with it, put win7 back on.

It really is that simple.

Not heard of dual booting then? I love Win 7 and have it running great, had no interest in Win 8 until I got a copy of 8 Pro for £25 so I thought why not dual boot it with my beloved 7. Every day I'm spending more and more time with Win 8 and now 8.1 and less on 7. I think you have to give it time and it grows on you, it no longer annoys me and I'm enjoying using it and now I don't know what all the fuss was about. Never thought I'd say that. :D

Kinda what I'm waiting for too, only really looking at changing for DX11 (BF4) support else I'd happily stick with my Win 7 Ultimate (which cost far too much money!).

Clearly I've been living under a rock for a while... is this actually a thing? DX11 works fine under Windows 7 doesn't it? *ponders upgrade whilst throwing up in my mouth a little.*

It's your theme settings, go to the settings option on the charms bar (hover mouse in top right corner)

I quite like Windows 8 to be honest. Everything seems to work fine. The only issue i have come across is sometimes shortcuts will lose their icons. I found a .bat file to execute that rebuilds the icon cache which works to fix it so it isnt a huge issue.

I will upgrade to 8.1 at some point next week :)

Had Win8 for one week.
On 7th day I lost patience to it being completely incompatible with any software I used with Win 7.
Format c:
Installed Win7 again and thrown Win8 instalation disk to the closet. Its still there, under pile of boxes and staying for good.

What happens when games start to run better on WIndows 8?

Battlefield 4 runs better on Windows 8 and 8.1 has improvements for AMD APUs by as much as 10% faster just for using 8.1

I'd be interested to hear what software is incompatible with Windows 8, everything I use runs fine and I use some pretty non-mainstream software.

I put 8.1 pro 64bit yesterday I got it for free being a student played BF3 last night and I did get 10-15 fps extra not much but every little helps lol

I installed yesterday through the store and ended up reinstalling windows 8 as it broke allsorts. World Of Tanks wouldn't run, google was all messed up & Killing Floor had a strange problem that where ever I moved the mouse the pointer sort of painted on the screen. I thought it would have given an option to remove 8.1 by going into system restore but no it removed all previous restore points.

Windows 8 has broken some games for me but not all. Sleeping Dogs for example. Some older games are broken but new(er) titles like BF3, ARMA 3, Metro LL are all fine

I got a message pop up last night saying the 8.1 upgrade had been took of store for now there seems to be a problem with the upgrade for some people.

I am sorry to hear that, as it was my 'job' for this afternoon.

Have Microsoft provided an alternative method to 'upgrade' from 8.0 to 8.1 in the meantime, do we know?

It worked fine on my wife's PC a couple of days ago too!
