Windows 8 Adoption Poor

If metro were superior to the start menu, we wouldn't have to use solutions such as start8 and startisback.
who says you have to use start8 and startisback? the only reason why someone would use it is because they can't get over not having the start menu

You don't have to use start8 or its like. You've chosen to do so because you happen to dislike the modern UI and/or are unwilling to let go of the old start menu.

Its not even that I dislike it or unwilling to let go of it - what some people can't seem to see is that for some users (and its a large proportion of users, not a niche of users) the start menu works in the optimal way - so why force yourself for progress's sake to work in a way that less optimal for the way you do things?

I'm sure there are plenty of people also who like the new setup but personally I don't even have a use for many of the headline features it brings.

Well said.

I find the start screen so much quicker now I've found you just start typing what you want :)

Windows search is great & saves a lot of time.

I rarely used the start menu in Windows 7 and I rarely use it now in Windows 8 but when I do it's a lot more convenient than it used to be.

People seem to be saying Metro is worse - FACT. It's absolutely not fact. You dislike it, I like it, it's opinion. I'm sure if people put a little more effort into using it they would find it at least as good as the old start menu.

He doesn't seem to grasp this or the basic concept that the new interface does everything the old one did either as well or better

Its like you give him the information, write it out as a nice explanation, and then he continues as if he hasn't even seen it lol

Glad to see some people getting it :)

I've always said it should be an option. A business is going to have a hard time getting this out to the users if they have to re-train them (and where does most of Microsoft's money come from?)

I just don't like how applications flick between 'proper' apps such as Mail and then the desktop apps such as cmd, etc.

i.e. you're in Metro you type CMD and it takes you to the desktop. Also don't like the metro file manager - it's awful and definitely a step back (explorer is far superior IMHO).

I don't dislike Windows 8 - I love some of the Metro apps which update and I love the file copy statistics (also it is a lot faster at file copying than Windows 7). I'm genuinely now looking forward to 8.1.

I hated it when I first got it but the simple fact is that Win8 is better than Win7, though I can understand the older types getting a little disorientated with it.

I'm 50 ;) no issues with Win8 or my Linux Distro's .

I'll say I personally think its the younger generation that are moaning more and refusing to adapt,we old timers have seen it all from DOS days to Win8 etc...I can even remember the Sinclair ZX81 when it was new ie black and white no sound etc...

(cookie if you can find the start button :D hehe) .
Bottomline younger generation have it far too easy compared to the old days :) .

CLI is my preference and I'm much younger than you. :D

Im running W8 on all PC's at home and will get a win8 tablet once the hardware has caught up to the OS (Im thinking next gen atom and better design)
As a desktop OS, W8 is great, I have removed all metro apps from the start screen, re-arranged all my groups and shortcuts, and it works a treat.
My only issue is the identity crisis W8 has, if I am in desktop mode, then everything I do should bring up a desktop equivalent app, it should never go into metro at all. I have spent ages playing around with default program associations to stop this happening, but I still get it occasionally even now.
If MS can sort this out with Win Blue or whatever they are calling it, then Im happy as I think W8 is rock solid, just like I think metro is great for tablets, but the two shouldn't mix, and I think that is where the problem is, there should be a tablet version of Win8 for x86 chips, and a desktop version..

Your one up on me, my 1st machine was the 48K spectrum and all my pocket money went on buying PC mags and spending ages at the weekend typing in the code for programs listed to see if they would do what was claimed, and then trying to fix it when they didn't.

I'm disappointed that Microsoft are bowing to pressure. I think they were on the right track, and time would have resolved the issues people were facing once they familiarised themselves with the interface.
