Windows 8 Consumer Preview Thread

How will the downloaded version be installed? Sorry for the noob question, but i have always installed from a DVD or USB drive.

Will i be able to stick the downloaded version onto a USB drive for future use?

I'm stuck on the fence as to whether to upgrade to Windows 8 or not. One part of me wants to have the latest version of Windows but the other part of me is concerned about such a large change. I only recently switched to using Windows 7 (in March) before that I was a Mac OS X user and I've only just got used to Windows 7. Changing to Windows 8 looks like I'll have to start again from scratch.

Yes, there is even a downloadable tool to do this as well.

This will work with Windows 8?

Thinking about it, will Windows 8 need a USB boot drive install at all? As Windows 8 is just a upgrade isn't it? So it will be installed from with in the OS of Windows 7?

Again, i have never installed a upgrade version of windows either, always been a fresh install from a full version from physical media device.

Yes, the tool works fine with Windows 8 and will upgrade your machine just fine. Just make sure there is enough room on the boot drive as it will create a windows.old folder which is about the same size as your existing windows folder.

Installing the 64bit version on my main rig now.

Gulp let's hope this goes smoothly.

Hopeful, will have an under 10 sec boot time when complete

WEI update

Max rating is 9.9

I used to get

Processor - 7.4
Memory - 7.4
Graphics - 7.9
Gaming graphics - 7.9
Primary hard disk - 7.9

under windows 8 I am now getting

Processor - 7.5
Memory - 7.5
Graphics - 7.3
Gaming graphics - 7.3
Primary hard disk - 8.1

What are these performance gains you speak of?

In games it's either the same or lower fsp then windows 7 on my network all was the same as it would be.

Boot time, native USB3, less memory usage, more power efficient, networks come back up faster etc. Depends how you measure performance I suppose.

So nothing win 7 can't do now. And performance is down to CPU\GPU\HD plus the speed and how much ram you have.

Win 8 looks good for tablets but that's it ..but that's just my opinion.

There's plenty Windows 8 can do that Windows 7 can't. It can't hybrid boot for starters. And performance isn't simply down to specs.

The student version of windows will be full wont it, how much for that is likely

New install of windows and a new dl from your link and its apparently not possible to reinstall directx like this. win8 comes with a newer version or something like that.
I presume theres no other reason why it'd error on a new install and everyone gets a similar result

Steam will work but bf3 from origin gives directx error on win8

BF3 works fine for me on W8 Professional RTM. :D
