Yes. I am running Steam on Windows 8 with no problems, TBH it does seems to be much smoother than Windows 7.

There's plenty Windows 8 can do that Windows 7 can't. It can't hybrid boot for starters. And performance isn't simply down to specs.

Hybrid boot is combination between hibernate and shutdown and well that's it really.
But tell me of the other great things win 8 can do that win 7 can't.
I'm not a fan boy of any OS, I have win 7 and linux in duel boot and if Linux ran games I would drop windows like a stone.

To be honest, I can't be bothered. From your tone it sounds as if you've already made up your mind and would rather not use Windows anyway.

No please be bothered as I said I am not a OS fan boy. I have googled like mad and found nothing.
So I was hoping you would shed light on all these great new things.

Apologies if this has been answered before, I've had a quick read through the last few pages and I've found some hints to my question but not fully answered.

Looking to pre-order Win8 pro (not an upgrade), found it for £49.99. Does that sound right?

edit: Also what options are there if I want to install on two machines? Do i need to buy 2 copies or do they do a multi license deal?

the £49.99 deal is also an upgrade. The only way the like of you and me can buy a full version is going to be the personal Licence (old OEM) version) which is licensed for just one machine. If you want to upgrade more than none machine, you will have to buy more copies.

incidentally, why not just upgrade online with Microsoft for just £25 - that way you can upgrade 2 machines for £50, the same as you are thinking of spending. the download can be copied to a memory stick or disk for use if a reformat is needed.

Note that Windows 8 has a feature that will do, effectively, a re-install in place, either keeping personal data or starting afresh so re-formats will not be needed so often.

I could do one upgrade for the desktop, but the lappy belongs to work and that would need a full retail license.

Well a work machine could use a bulk licence from your work if they are licensing Windows that way. I think the enterprise version is a full version come to think.

Is there any negative points with upgrading a Windows 7 install that isn't a fresh install?

I remember back in the day that there was rumours that doing a upgrade instead of a fresh install could have a hit on performance, i take it this wont be the case with Windows 8?

I'm after a no fuss upgrade/install, as i cant be arsed to install Windows 7 again as my current install isn't that old. I just feels a little weird doing a upgrade as i have always installed from scratch.

I hope others comment on this who are using the full version. My experience with the release Preview is that upgrading become just as fast, or faster, than the Windows 7 it replaced. It does, after all, create its own Windows folder and its own install and moved the Windows 7 install into a folder called Windows.old Thus it is a new install really!

Any idea why it creates a Windows.old folder? Is it in case you want to roll back?
