Windows 8 Consumer Preview Thread

The start menu and that hideous control panel (yes it's still there, but they've put a lovely HUD-like skin on top for the frequently used items).

Tried it, the application now starts up but it doesn't seem to work properly.

Hmm.
Can you switch inputs though?

EDIT : @ Nathan, that video was before the RTM, in the consumer and release preview as far as I recall (at least on the consumer preview which he used) there wasn't any guide after installation.
Also don't think shut down is any faster, clicking the orb and then shut down is pretty much the same thing except you're aiming at a specific target (The Orb)

Not that I don't think the OS nice and fast.

To be honest its exactly the same ... but ... Is it not a bit daft to have to click "start" when you want the PC to stop? ;)

That joke is as old as the hills. Shutdown.exe is a program which needs to be STARTed like any other. I know you know that but I'm saying it anyway. :p

I know lol. Its a design consideration as old as GUIs themselves though. What makes sense to us (with a deeper knowledge of how PCs work) doesn't always make sense to the average user.
There are design elements (in my opinion of course) that haven't evolved along side the userbase of a home PC. Windows does have a lot of stuff hanging around that the majority of users don't use, or care about. And things are often in places that don't make sense unless you know how they work, where most people these days only really know (or need to know) what it does.

Not sure how we can cope, that could be a problem in time.

Not within the lifetime of Win8 though.

People started getting 4gig machines a while after Vista was released?
People had 4 gig systems before Vista and even after Vista was out we are still within XP’s lifespan. Win 8 low max ram useage is not a major problem it is just a low number. 16gig and 24gig setups are already getting semi common so I can see in years 128gig being hit.

No they're not.
Maybe among some enthusiasts, I myself run 16GB, but most people run 4-8, obviously you get some people running 32GB etc, but they're the minority.

Only the ones clinging to XP long after they should have moved on. Oddly, the ones hanging on to XP so tightly were the ones with high-end systems with the most to gain from an upgrade.
16GB and 24GB are no where near common. Not by a long shot. Remember those of us here are a tiny minority compared to the rest of the Windows userbase.

The start menu is one the best things about windows..I use it all the time..

I don't use it much at all. My applications are either pinned, or I just hit the win key then start typing the name and hit enter.
