Windows 8 Consumer Preview Thread

Awful awful music. And they could do with some sort of brief but stylish voice over. If they fix that in time for them going on TV then these ads could work nicely. They definitely show how much more advanced the OS is than the lightweight that is iOS.

Where is the start button? How do i turn it off, iv just been switching off the plug! now its not working at all. How do i get to the desktop :P

Edit: In response to the above post. Not genuine questions. Though when i first got win8 it took me 3 days to find the shutdown :P

Click the desktop icon.

Power loads of ways, click on your name/icon, lock screen then press power icon.
Or get charms up > settings > power

There isn't a start button, you have a start screen now, rather than button.
However if you right click where the start button used to be, there's settings and admin type stuff there.

Of course they will sell a lot... People want tablet PC's but they don't want iPad's because nothing works with them - they don't even have a single USB port!

Literally every "layman" PC user I know is waiting to buy a Windows 8 tablet. Couch computing is about to hit the mainstream.

Guys, I have some queries about upgrading to Windows 8 after I found out it will only be £24.99:

I currently have Win 7 Pro retail version installed, but still have an old Vista OEM disk lying around.

I understand that if I upgrade my OS, I lose access to the old one, so when Win 8 is released, should I reinstall Vista instead and upgrade that instead, or even better can my Vista license be upgraded to Windows 8 without reinstalling it?

The more I see everyone elses' desktop the more I realise that Metro is a step forward, people are using their computers like that anyway with all the junk they have on their desktop and aren't using the start menu. Instead of having to minimise everything (because these are the kind of people who don't know about win+d) they're now just a button press away from their desktop icons.

Obviously for the power users it's not of much benefit but for normal users I think it could work.

XP, Vista and 7 all qualify for the online upgrade pricing.

MS have indicated there will be a way to upgrade without having the qualifying OS installed, but they have not elaborated as to how this will work. It was raised by a number of people because they didn't want to reinstall an OS just to get the upgrade when they are currently running one of the previews of 8 (which obviously doesn't qualify).

So you should be able to use Vista - but if it's not installed the details as to how are not known just yet.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who only has recycle bin on their desktop.

Good question. We don't know just how the upgrade site will look, yet, or how one qualifies for the upgrade. Some of us have the RTM trial or the Release Preview installed so one might assume that it will be just a case of giving the serial number of the version of Windows to be updated. I would hope one can do a full install too as it would be a pain to take off one of the Windows 8 versions I mentioned just to put the old OS on and then upgrade it.

Time will tell and I'd wait and see what's needed when the site opens.

If it was a simple right click I would remove recycle bin, but as I said before I really like metro due to live tiles. Make use of that desktop. So many thinks can be displayed and I never need to launch the full app.other things I know don't need to manually check as live tiles will now tell me if there's anything new.

Does anyone know if it will be possible to do a
clean install when purchasing an upgrade online?
I have no interest in installing win8 over the top
of my existing win7 64bit HP installation as that can
cause problems down the road.
