Windows 8 Consumer Preview Thread

I've tried installing ATI drivers but I still get an annoying black border on my second monitor (Connected via HDMI). Primary monitor is fine but this is really starting to bug me now.

I have ordered a Dell Inspiron Duo to play with Windows 8, as it was the cheapest possible way to get a touchscreen pc that met the minimum resolution standards.

Waiting for delivery so I can touch windows.

the correct number and quote is:

"In fact, 88% of app launches are from outside the Start menu today".

That makes more sense; the problem with the original 'quote' was that it was claiming "88% of Windows 7 users already do not use the Start menu", which is a far less believable than if just talking about app launches.

I mostly launch from items pinned to taskbar, but I still use the start menu on a regular basis.

I'm liking it, mostly. It's not exactly intuitive at times, but given its a bare bones beta that's hardly surprising, or much of a problem. The biggest problem i have is internet explorer refusing to load certain images and video and lack of flash. It means I have to use chrome, which doesn't have that full screen metro goodness. Otherwise I do like it a lot :)

That sounds like a scaling issue. Just go to the Catalyst Control Centre > My Digital Flat-Panels > Scaling Options and scale the monitor until the border is gone.

I'm running the AMD Windows 8 Consumer Preview drivers and they're working fine. Games performance seems a tad slower but I haven't had any actual problems with games, unlike with the Developer Preview (that broke half my games).

On using a USB stick to boot I find that I now need an 8gb stick - 4gb is not large enough!
The minimum required size is 16GB and Microsoft is targeting 32GB as the typical size, plus you need to make sure the drive actually has decent read/write speeds. A 32GB USB3 drive with 135/40Mb/s read/write speeds costs less than £40. Cheap pendrives have read/write speeds of 10/5Mb/s, so even if it were to run the experience would be pretty terrible. Time to upgrade.
