Windows 8 Consumer Preview Thread

Here's a quick list I've compiled of WinKey shortcuts:

WinKey + Q - Quick Drop to Applications and Search
WinKey + W - Quick Drop to Settings (not control panel)
WinKey + E - Unchanged from previous versions (Explorer)
WinKey + R - Unchanged from previous versions (Run)
WinKey + T - Unchanged from previous versions (Scroll through open apps in the taskbar, similar to alt+tab or win+tab, but won’t switch, only preview)
WinKey + I - Brings in the sidebar for quick access to Desktop, Control Panel, Personalization, etc
WinKey + P - Unchanged from previous versions (Dual / extended screen controls)
WinKey + D - Unchanged from previous versions (Straight to Desktop / Minimise open apps)
WinKey + F - Search for Files
WinKey + H - Share feature
Winkey + K - Devices menu
WinKey + L - Unchanged from previous versions (Lock Computer )
WinKey + Z - All Apps menu bar (only from Metro UI)
WinKey + X - A classic UI menu for all essential areas such as , Programs, Network, Control Panel, Computer Management, Device Manager, Task Manager, etc, etc
WinKey + C - Shortcut to time and search functions
WinKey + M - Unchanged from previous versions (Minimise to Desktop)

I like WinKey X a lot :)

I want to setup dual boot with Windows 8 and Windows 7. But I only have a 60GB SSD with 21GB of space on it. Is this enough to install windows 8?

Not really sure what to do!

Thanks :)

Just installed it to a VM.

Can't say i'm impressed, completely unintuitive and gimmicky.

Edit: And so does everyone else who I've showed it to.

10/10 for looks.

0/10 for doing the job it is intended to do...

Exact same thoughts here.

Going to install it on my main pc in a minute, and use it as a main OS for a few days... see how i get on with it with a bit more time.

And what job would that be? It does everything 7 does and more. It's faster, uses less RAM, boots quicker, has better multi monitor support, and searching in Metro is much easier. Even simple tasks like copying files is now easier and i can give many other examples.

It's intended job is to be one single OS that runs on everything and for that it does it very well.

And using it in VM software is useless, you wont see any of the speed improvements.

after all the crap i have said about windows 8 there is one thing that i just LOVE

connecting my windows phone 7 to it everything from calender, pictures, podcasts, skydrive all sync'ed up is sooooo nice without any problems

maybe just maybe i am starting to turn around my feelings about win8

was looking u could do it on the dev version via registry hack but cant find it there now

Indeed, Microsoft has blocked off the possibilities for change. This is a shame as it would at least allow people to use the OS as they want.

As it is, we have to use large clunky squares and rectangles rather than nice icons to make it possible to use the OS on a small touch screen. This is the problem I have with the OS.

Someone previously mentioned that the enterprise version MIGHT have the traditional start screen. Perhaps MS removing all possibility of disabling metro is to allow the enterprise version to have a primary selling point... Otherwise why would they remove the option? Its not skin off their back and we would have paid for the copy...

Or perhaps because its beta and they want us to test metro. And later on they might introduce it back once testing is finished.

By that i meant reintroduce the registry address to disable metro. Not reintroduce the start menu completely.

Mehhh not keen on it at the moment. Its too tablet-aimed for my liking.

Stuff like a lock screen, the way certain apps work and take up the whole screen and no obvious way to resize them.

Only had a very very brief play at the moment, but so far i dont like it, and can really tell its designed for tablet pc's. (I know thats stating the obvious, but I'd have preferred it to install different feature sets depending on device or something... not a one-size fits all approach...)

Any one know of a way of making my applications come up as proper tiles in Windows 8, a bit like the default ones. I know they won't work as live tiles but they could look a lot better than they currently do.
