Windows 8 Consumer Preview Thread

I'm getting really poor wireless performance running on my 13" MacBook Pro (Bootcamp). Wired is fine. All the latest drivers and updates applied. Wired performance is fine.

Here's a quick list I've compiled of WinKey shortcuts:

WinKey + Q - Quick Drop to Applications and Search
WinKey + W - Quick Drop to Settings (not control panel)
WinKey + E - Unchanged from previous versions (Explorer)
WinKey + R - Unchanged from previous versions (Run)
WinKey + T - Unchanged from previous versions (Scroll through open apps in the taskbar, similar to alt+tab or win+tab, but won’t switch, only preview)
WinKey + I - Brings in the sidebar for quick access to Desktop, Control Panel, Personalization, etc
WinKey + P - Unchanged from previous versions (Dual / extended screen controls)
WinKey + D - Unchanged from previous versions (Straight to Desktop / Minimise open apps)
WinKey + F - Search for Files
WinKey + H - Share feature
Winkey + K - Devices menu
WinKey + L - Unchanged from previous versions (Lock Computer )
WinKey + Z - All Apps menu bar (only from Metro UI)
WinKey + X - A classic UI menu for all essential areas such as , Programs, Network, Control Panel, Computer Management, Device Manager, Task Manager, etc, etc
WinKey + C - Shortcut to time and search functions
WinKey + M - Unchanged from previous versions (Minimise to Desktop)

I like WinKey X a lot :)

winkey x right click bottom right of screen :D

And what job would that be? It does everything 7 does and more. It's faster, uses less RAM, boots quicker, has better multi monitor support, and searching in Metro is much easier. Even simple tasks like copying files is now easier and i can give many other examples.

It's intended job is to be one single OS that runs on everything and for that it does it very well.

And using it in VM software is useless, you wont see any of the speed improvements.

The time it takes me to get into Windows 7 under VM and launch Matlab is less than it is to launch W8 under VM and launch Matlab.

I run Windows ONLY to run apps that don't run under OS X. W8 makes these takes slower. Period. I have absolutely NO use for Metro UI what so ever.

It is completely unintuitive if two highly experienced computer users couldn't figure out WTF was going on.

Sorry, but it is a mess. Given that W8 will be the first system I would have to pay for (W7 licenses via MSDN at uni) I don't think it's worth £0 over W7, let alone the ridiculous prices Professional will be sold for.

Unfortunately, Lion has also added gimmicky features which as a pro user makes my life more difficult.

I hate the way desktop OSs are going.

after all the crap i have said about windows 8 there is one thing that i just LOVE

connecting my windows phone 7 to it everything from calender, pictures, podcasts, skydrive all sync'ed up is sooooo nice without any problems

maybe just maybe i am starting to turn around my feelings about win8

LOL.

Something I've been doing with my iPhones since 2008. Took them a while to work that one out...

That sounds like a scaling issue. Just go to the Catalyst Control Centre > My Digital Flat-Panels > Scaling Options and scale the monitor until the border is gone.

I'm running the AMD Windows 8 Consumer Preview drivers and they're working fine. Games performance seems a tad slower but I haven't had any actual problems with games, unlike with the Developer Preview (that broke half my games).

I've installed the AMD Win 8 CP driver but dont see a catalyst control panel anywhere...its like its not installing properly.

When I look at the supported models the 48xx range isnt listed :/

Sounds like time to try Linux then

Same thing there too .... check the unity / gnome 3 rants flying around.

I stopped using Joli OS as it's way too early for HTML5 web apps

So for my laptop it's plain old gnome 2 with compiz, which I'm very happy with

I'll upgrade when there's more direction with linux app stores

experiences over the past couple of days are, holy hell this is the smoothest operating system I have ever used, everything is almost 'instant' responsive. also has had some peculiar and quite welcome side effects, processor temperatures are notable lower than before without the room feeling any cooler or anything, quad-core, eight-thread (like its supposed to be!) and it runs applications so so so much smoother and snappier, also benchmarking has apparently went up across the board seemingly, CB11.5 gives better scores (~0.9), Wprime is faster, Frybench is faster, Starcraft II runs quite clearly better as well. the full release cannot come soon enough for me I must say. :D

Enjoyed running this on my main desktop so thought I would put it on an old XP laptop. The laptop is an HP 510 notebook (not the Compaq one) everything is up and running apart from the display driver. I'm getting a basic 1024x768 resolution and all that is installed in the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter.
The laptop uses a Mobile Intel915GM/GMS,910GML Express Chipset according to intros website. I've got the xp driver but it fails to install, and there are no windows 7 drivers, anybody got ideas on how to get this working? :)

Tried doing it manually? you can rip the driver out of the installer package and install it via device manager

But that's just gnome. Yes, Gnome 2 was the perfect option for a beginner. But KDE and XFCE have come on leaps and bounds lately. Besides, there's always Mate :p

What do you mean by that?

Far from it, Gnome 2 with a mint menu or synapse make it very easy to search and execute programs/data. So in essence I already have the power of search without the need to ever touch the program menu. Common apps in docky, everything else I search for... I can't ever remember navigating around for apps using the mint menu

Has MATE matured yet ? Its been a while since I last looked :o

If you look at something like the Ubuntu Software Centre the concept of an online store is there albeit very poorly executed. This has to become more full in your face like what MS is attempting with metro.
