Windows 8 Consumer Preview Thread

I can't reassign any net protocols so all http links etc open in IE instead of my default browser. This makes me sad.

I can't get my creative console settigns to stick either. Reset to default every time I reboot.

It wont let me choose an application other than IE. For file types it gives me a list of all my applications. For Protocols it only gives me IE and a button that says look for apps in the app store which implies it's only going to allow metro apps to be used...

Is there another way to do it?

Go back one and select the top of the list, set program defaults or something like that. Click on Firefox or what ever your using and then hit the set all defaults button.

Sadly I agree with most of the points. I'm very similar to the author in that I've used Windows since v3.10 and prior to that DOS. I've enjoyed every version (including 98se and Vista) and not had a problem. Metro, with the way it's currently implimented, I can't really use. I'm trialling the CP on a Tablet and still don't like it on that. Everything I've spent years learning has really just been turned on it's head.

Strangely I can see it working for new users on a tablet - where by they don't have much Windows experience. It's so frustrating to not have a Start menu - hell I like the Start menu.

I won't be going to Linux - I'll be staying on Windows 7. Metro, in my opinion, should be like Media Centre. It's available if you want to use it, you can set it to start on boot, but you don't have to have it if you don't like it.

It really isn't after a few hours use, it's so much better than the start button that was rarely used.

I actually constantly use the Start menu - Windows 7 took a little getting used to (and hacking to have my 'classic' start menu on there).

Windows + E, Windows + M, Windows + R are keys I use hundreds of times a day. Then just hitting Windows key and typing what I want is useful - I don't have any icons on my Desktop - I like it clean (personal choice) I don't want tiles all over the place.

Desktops still there you don't need to use metro other than seeing it after signing in. Winkey + q brings up app screen, much better than start menu, with full search. Means you don't need and icons at all on desktop.

You can still hit Windows key and type what you want... just start typing in Metro. You dont have to bring up any search box, just type. It also shows more results and scales with resolution.

Ahhh! I have literally spent the last hour trying to do anything at all... First impressions are, the public are not going to like this.

I don't suppose anyone knows how to get metro to work on a secondary screen?

I just told Chrome to be my default browser at it is.

Well, just spent the last hour tinkering with it and must say, I am not a fan.

If I had a tablet it would be awesome, but I don't and as such I find it a massive pain in the backside. For the love of god, please, put a start button on the desktop, give me the option of booting straight to desktop and give me the option to disable metro entirely if I want to. It would be so easy to implement these changes and wouldn't harm tablet users while still keep desktop users from pulling their hair out! Do it ms do it!

Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong. Burnt ISO to a DVD. Changed BIOS to boot from CD - pressed any key to boot from DVD. Installed W8, it restarted and I thought it would continue with the installation. However when I boot with no input from me Windows 7 loads and if I press any key when prompted, same thing.
