Windows 8 Consumer Preview Thread

Indeed, the problem is it's almost impossible for the likes of Apple and Microsoft to make revolutionary changes to the OS without upsetting a lot of people who prefer the comfy feel of knowing where everything is and how it works.

Metro is a great example of that as was Windows XP in it's day.

I dont mind change if its optional but why cant we have both? Usually Im using windows to do something else. They replace everything and I have to learn how to use a boring OS, I dont care enough to do that tbh.

I just want a button in the corner, I press it and it flicks right back to the old interface. If Im bored I'll play with win 8 metro magic boxes and all that, maybe it is better but its a secondary concern

Metro is not so bad, it does pretty much do both and people do hate change definitely

How do I group my applications and programs on the start screen? so I can have a heading "Adobe" then all CS apps under it for example, or "Development" and have things Visual Studio, etc under that?

Can someone tell me whether Windows 8 is allocating 1.5x RAM as pagefile like Windows 7 does - or whether they've changed it up?

Memory allocation with 4GB ram and running x64:

Paul Thurrot, a MS veteran blogger has posted an article I pretty much totally agree with and it's aimed at many of the 'power' users that are vocal on boards like this.

Windows 8 Consumer Preview: A Call for Common Sense

What a self-absorbed idiot. I've never read his blogs before (and never will again) but he comes across as arogrant with the 'I will not', 'No-one cares', etc. well if no-one cares why would they complain or ask for it?

It may be a preview and it may not have all features that will be released but if you don't speak now then you can guarantee those features won't be available where as, as people have bought them to life, they may get added or items may get changed. That's what releasing these previews is for.

I know we won't roll out Windows 8. Suggesting it will be rolled out 'along-side' Windows 7 is stupidity. Most companies refresh every 3-5 years (depending on how big they are and what technologies they want to use) so they normally miss an operating system (i.e. XP to Windows 7, Windows 7 to Windows 9) and there's good reason for this historically.

I still stand by my original statement of making Metro like Media Centre - where by people have choice. I can't understand why making something optional would be a bad thing.

as its gone, it's not coming back. Desktop is running like a metro app. It's there for legally support, it's been replaced by something better. all the people moaning will love it when windows9 is released and all the "errors" are fixed. But it's not errors it's just people learning and embracing the change.
It's happened before and it'll happene again.

Just like vista, it's oh so terrible, oh wait but you love w7 which is barely different, you just got used to the changes.

I guess because Metro is much more than just a fancy graphical overlay. It's the first step in a fundamental change in how applications and the OS operates. If you make a change as fundamental as Metro optional you end up with usage rates similar to Media Centre, which is something daft like 2% of Windows 7 sold. Sometimes you have to just bite the bullet and lead people by the nose into new stuff. All the same complaints came up with DOS(CLI)vs Windows3.0/3.1/3.11 (which was the first widely used version I guess), Win3.11vsWin95/2000, and most recently Win95/2000 vs Windows XP (which although hailed as a masterpiece now was hated by droves of "IT pros" who would inevitably switch the "gaudy fisher price" Luna UI off, go back to the classic Windows 2000 ui theme and try to make XP back into windows 95/2000.

I suppose there is wisdom in that if people just want Win7 then just stick with Win7 and skip this OS iteration. After all it is just an OS, it's there to get you to your Apps/Games etc. in a quick, secure, stable way. If Metro and the other changes add no value to a person or scenario then stick with Win7 which has proved to be a fine OS.

I'd be amazed if Win9 doesn't take it a step further with the traditional/old fashioned "desktop" vanishing almost altogether.

Time for a change and something that looks to the future rather than yet another variation of a task bar with popup/drop down menus, start buttons etc that have been around of Window/Mac/Atari/Amiga and others for 30+ years.

the first post in this thread is a great highlight for why Win8 is interesting beyond getting hung up on part of the ui http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=19963048&postcount=1

been using it since Saturday, didn't like it in the first couple of hours and although I like some features now most are just disapointingly mush. Will likely wait till Win 9 to upgrade.

Windows XP - Winner
Windows Vista - Loser
Windows 7 - Winner
Windows 8 - Loser
Windows 9 - Winner
Windows 10 - Loser

Linux - Always Winner

yep because they always change the wallpaper and theme then they call it version 14.1 lol

to put it in simples, take the mouse to the edge of the screen especially the corners and freaky shenanigans starts happens

if in doubt wave the mouse about and some menu of some kind should appear

I can get steam to work but not COD4. Only problem so far.

probably for the best then

Try update AMD on the steam menu

That blog post was moronic. That guy usually comes out with some good info, but it is not surprising that he would be in favor of everything MS does. There are some people who just jump on anything that is released no matter how terrible it is. I won't name any names, but if MS released something as a joke that was totally crap that would be an army of people defending it.

Those people are like, use the new metro ui and give feedback if you don't like it. yea i am telling you its crap right now but you just call me a troll and tell me to shut up. People just want to put their fingers in their ears and go a long with it. Well I am not the type of person that does not like change, i have never moaned just for the sake of change. However i will moan when i think MS release an OS that sucks. There is nothing to get over. If you don't like negative comments about Blocks 8 (tm) then don't read it.

I'm sorry, but Windows 7 is Windows Vista properly fixed. I tried Vista and it ran like a 2 legged dog. I tried Windows 7 on the same hardware and it ran like a Greyhound.

That's before SP1 on both OS's.

Yet Win 8 runs even better than 7, and boots faster, starts software faster, uses less RAM, uses less processes, even people are getting lower CPU temperatures. It's also more secure, and does considerably more than 7. Even basic every day tasks like file copying has improved, everything is better. And many things are streamlined and quicker to do if people would stop trying to use it as if it's 7, and instead actually learn stuff.

95% of the negative comments in this thread are people just moaning because something has changed, even when theres a better alternative. It's sad and pathetic. It's also amazing these people have made it this far in life if they're like this with anything that changes.
