Windows 8 Consumer Preview Thread

does anyone have a full method for disabling UAC out of interest?

Still skipping past metro here :(

Control Panel / Action centre allows you to turn off notifications from UAC which I suppose will effectively kill it. I haven't really seen the need to do it, though, as I am not normally doing things that bring it up.

I keep noticing small improvements to the desktop, like:

When you delete something, it no longer prompts you asking if you're sure, it just deletes it to the bin.

Pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL now makes the screen appear instantly, theirs a slight delay on Vista/7 and on some monitors it used to make them go blank for a second.

Ending a program in Task Manager will end it immediately, you dont have to wait for it to do something, or wait for a window to appear saying something like "this program has stopped responding" then having to click close. It now ends the program immediately in a single click.

After i installed a game and launched it, Win 8 recognised it was missing a .NET framework which the game needed to run, so it then automatically downloaded it.

The bug for expanding folders in the list on the left side of Explorer is now fixed.

When you close a window in 7, theres this microsecond stutter in the closing animation on every PC i've used (hundreds). This always bothered me because Vista never had it. Anyway it's now fixed.

When you import photos from a camera or phone, XP, Vista and 7 did not display some photos in the correct rotation (for instance if you took a portrait shot the pic will be displayed on it's side and needs to be rotated 90 degrees) but now 8 recognises the correct rotation, with both thumbnail pics and in Windows Photo Viewer.

Programs start up quicker.

It didn't ask to set up my net connection, it just worked.

After install it detected the correct screen res for all 3 of my monitors, using Crossfire 6970's. Win 7 wont do this.

And of course theres more obvious stuff that everyone should have noticed (like being able to pause file transfers).

Why close my Windows 8 thread??

I put a lot of effort in to the first post listing all the new features within Win 8 and now all the people rushing to download the BETA/Consumer Preview wont see any of this. It was the only place on these forums where you could see all the big Win 8 features in a single post. Theres already enough incorrect comments going around regarding Win 8.

Nice one.

There should be two threads. One for the Consumer Preview and one for Win 8 news and features.

I've started a new thread for Features, Applications and News:

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18381377

You might want to add some of your posts into this new one.

Can people please keep stuff just pertaining to the preview out of the new thread. :)

Interesting Mr B. I certainly found Win 8 recognised hardware and connections well and when set up everything worked. It even found my network printer! As for monitors, isn't 3 showing off or is it the rest if us are jealous?

The trouble is that the small improvements really don't weigh much against the awful Metro interface - which is why I won't be buying it.

I honestly can't get the Xonar stuff to work =(.
Depressed.

I had the same issue with my dg, but managed to install in compatibility mode (win 7) and all was well.

I quite like it, but it takes getting used to. I balked at metro at first, but I see it being quite handy, almost like a second desktop with more functions.

hahahah

Has anyone found out how to create a tile yet ?

Just been doing a search on google and no one seems to have cracked it yet. Its easy to pin applications to the start menu and create a shortcut but it seems an actual tile is more than just a shortcut, it can be animated and auto updated, links can be embedded and alsorts.

Looks like its a golden quest at the moment, first person to manage it will be heralded.

Just installed. Two quick questions.

I'm assuming my old Win7 installation is saved in windows.old? Can this be removed and stored for safe keeping to save space. I've only got a 60gb ssd drive and need all the space I can get. This would give me an extra 20gb!

Also, is Windows ESD the installation files for Win8? I assume these can also be moved and stored for safe keeping.

Bit odd considering the first picture clearly has apps running in resizeable windows that are neither tiles not full screen. Windows 8 equally is perfectly capable of doing fully resizeable windows.

Win 8 continues to run pretty much anything in Windows 7 style desktop the same as Win 7, it just gives you an option for touch friendly Metro based Apps as well. I'm not losing anything and am gaining an additional interface.

Shoo back under your bridge trolly

The start button has gone, it's just the Metro home page instead. I really don't understand what's confusing about it. instead of clicking the Orb and getting a list of programs to choose to run, you either just type the name of the app, or click the tile/shortcut on the metro page the same as if it was on the old desktop. Just regard the Metro screen as a pre expanded start program list.

It looks a bit different but for most stuff functionally it's almost the same except it's touch friendly as well.

I'm more interested in some of the other changes like file copy able to resume if interrupted or shut down , task management, support for UEFI, refresh, Windows to go and a few other bits and pieces. Windows 8 is the first step in a change to PC OS in along time, it upsets people who are stuck in the past, much like the uproar as people complained about Windows XP and it's brightly coloured "Fisher Price" Luna UI. We'll get used to it and in 3 or 4 years time look back on the Windows 7 type gui as archaic and old fashioned.

support for UEFI

I tried booting this on a new gigabyte H61 UEFI board yesterday and it booted in like 20 seconds (on a 500GB mech HDD). I have not had a chance to try the Windows device boot menu yet but i expect it to work as well.

It was also interesting to notice that during the initial windows load (small circle thing) the BIOS splash screen is displayed in the background. I'm making a new spashscreen now to tidy it up a bit (the circle loading thing overlapped the gigabyte logo), I think there are some ms guidelines on the size and location for the OEM slpashscreen logo.

Theres very little difference from win8 to win7 if you ignore the metro grubbins. Just chuck everything on the desktop or taskbar. Also taskmgr will keep a list in its run menu if needed, you can pin that to the taskbar also

Yes you can delete windows.old This might have old data from program files or not, otherwise Im sure you can reinstall it all if needed.

The ISO can be installed to a USB, the OP instructions worked for me.
The loader seems to get confused over multiple boot drives, Ive had it mess up also

Try Winkey+Q and you can type in anything like the old win7 start menu allowed or just escape for a larger display of icons. I personally do not like the other scrolling thing either.
I have a small screen but this fits and its a new install I have not arranged it

I used windows 1 at the time and I can say this is much better though I did expect we'd advance more by now in terms of AI, avoiding repetition, etc

Indeed, the problem is it's almost impossible for the likes of Apple and Microsoft to make revolutionary changes to the OS without upsetting a lot of people who prefer the comfy feel of knowing where everything is and how it works.

Metro is a great example of that as was Windows XP in it's day.
