Windows 8 Consumer Preview Thread

Have you never installed a uk purchased version on w7, it installs IE

All they and to do was offer two version, one of which no one purchased.

So they'll yet again offer an N version which about 10 people will buy.

They've never shipped any Windows "E" versions that were meant to have no browser included. Instead, they shipped normal retail versions of the system and gave everyone the choice of a third party browser on install.

Windows 7 "N" is something else and you can normally purchase it online (but it costs the same as normal retail versions).

It is a shame that they did not make the train ui more customizable in blocks 8. If they had made the trains ui like rainmeter with an easy to understand configurable language, where people could easily make active content and change every single aspect of the ui. From changing the shapes of the blocks to having drop down menus to all different types of things, like rainmeter. Then it would be great.

Yes i know you can learn html 5 and make apps, but I am referring to customizing the actual ui. Even then, most people are not going to learn html 5 because it is a programming language, unlike rainmeter which was so easy even graphic designers could learn it.

I've "downgraded" back to Windows 7, though I am viewing it as an upgrade, I truly tried to give it a fair shot, I used it as my main driver for a couple of weeks but it was just to painful to use, far to bitty and awkward. I love that it literally boots in a flash and the lower footprint is excellent but it has no flow, no elegance etc...

It made my life harder as opposed to easier!

Just because you seem to "get it" and are a fan of Windows 8 Glaucus, does not give you the right to undermine peoples opinion.

I have no problem with metro, but typing things that don't show up as they're "not found" is annoying as hell, a problem I don't have on Windows 7.

Windows 7 has the same functionality as Metro and more, I don't see how removing that is good.

Keep up, we've been through all this.

But you're wrong and ChileanLlama is right.

1) Windows "E" (not "N") was ditched before release and instead all users had a choice of installing a different browser through Windows Update.
2) It was specific to European countries (due to the EU Commission ruling).
3) Windows "N", the one without Media Player, has sold in numbers and is still available from some retailers.

European Commission agreed to Windows having a choice of browsers installed along with Internet Explorer (that you only really needed to install another browser) but they also ruled that customers must have a choice of not using other pre-installed software (Windows Media, etc.) which is why Windows 7 "N" was offered to EU customers.

It's likely that Windows 8 will have a choice of browser again.

How am I undermining it, most of the stuff I've replied to, is people saying its not their, or takes a load more effort. Which just isn't true in pretty much all cases. It's just people haven't learnt the new way of doing things. Which even I've said is very annoying Untill you learn it.

Again it has not removed any functionality at all, to say that is a plain lie. It's accessed in a different way or displayed differently. All functionality and more is there.

There's a difference between lying and not knowing, a little respect please.

I asked for clearing up on that area because I wasn't sure myself if there was any other way of accessing different search tabs directly, without additional clicks.

It doesn't make me a liar in any case.

Of course it has.
I don't mind metro, in that on my netbook I've removed everything bar "desktop"

Also, wtf is with this resolution limitation on it? I can't launch IE on my netbook from within Metro.

Of course it has.
.

What functionality has it removed? Name one thing.
Removed shut down = no
Removed software = no
Removed search capabilities = no
Removed controll panel or any of the settings = no

Added a ton of stuff like live tiles, refresh, network capabilities and a hole host of other functionality = yes
You need 1366px wide for full Metro functionality.

There's a difference between lying and not knowing, .

that wasn't aimed at you.

I can't launch IE.
Resolution too low.
I can't do anything with Metro on my netbook.
All it does is create an extra layer getting into Windows for me.

I'm also not a fan of trawling through crap either.
Yes, I can "search", I can also search on Windows 7 start bar, it adds nothing.

Also, how on Earth do you lock in flipping Windows 8? I can't for the life of me find it.
I find Windows 8 okay to use, but please note, we're not real people, real people will struggle.

Yes you can, Goto desktop and launch it.

Resolution is metro only, which is added functionality anyway, so what's it removed?

Search on w7 start bar, or w8 start screen. Virtually no difference and certainly no more trawling.
It's a full screen start menu at its most basic.

Yes you can, Goto desktop and launch desktop version.

But why would I want to do that when I want to do it from switching my PC on and logging in? I have to click desktop, and then click on IE, which I'd removed from my desktop and task bar.

Well this is like talking to a brick wall, you won't accept other peoples opinion.

Or pin the desktop version to the start screen, then you can launch it from there. So still not an issue.

Bashing before giving it a try or doing some basic fiddling.
Anything can be pinned to start screen. There's two versions of ie, desktop and Metro. Desktop version will work fine for you.

I'm happy to accept other peoples opinions. When it's either an opinion or they have very good reason. For example the current crop of metro apps are massively lacking, for a start they don't make use of live tile and most of them even when open don't have good capabilities.

But stating stuff that is wrong, I'm not willing to accept.

Why should I start fiddling around with it? I want it to work, like Windows 7 does.
And I've given it a try, I don't mind it, but I find it limiting and annoying, that's my user experience of it, accept that.

Real people will feel the same way.
What do you think they'll do when they can't launch stuff?

Also, how do I lock it?

It does work, you don't need to fiddle with it, but you removed icons. So you obviously do want to fiddle.

So your hardware doesn't support one aspect of it.

I think advertising and tutorials will sort that. This is a preview. Not the full release, if you don't want to read or learn don't install it, simples.

As for lock
Several ways
Top right corner, settings, power
Winkey+I
Metro screen user icon (top right)

And probably a couple of other ways.

It's not really a fair test putting it on a netbook, MS have stated the resolution requirement for Metro, and the majority of netbooks fall below that.

If you want to try the other features and go straight to the desktop, put a shortcut to desktop.scf in the startup folder and after a short pause the Start Screen will disappear and drop you straight into the desktop - direct from logon, without clicking anything.
