Windows 8 Consumer Preview Thread

Xbox-360-Fall-2011-Dashboard-Update.jpg

I can't believe they added a xbox UI in to windows. I had no idea. I was just looking in to some windows 8 stuff and i read that it is the same as xbox. So i looked it up and found this.

Now that is contrived.

But they've limited it to the more common resolution for their touch screen audience.
And netbooks, which given the O/S is lighter than Windows 7, makes perfect sense to use over that Windows 7 starter.

what touch screen devices have 1366px atm? hardly any, well new ipad. So how does that theory work?

Suppose, not all seen perhaps?
I just hook my netbook upto a 22" anyway if need be.

I got the first two, they are helpful, that last one made no sense to me, start? What start? What user? :p

If you go the bottom most left you will see a Metro thumbnail - click it (or press the Start/Winkey)

On the Start Screen you should see your logged in username in the top right - click it

Select Lock.

How many users purchase O/S's :p
Most just use what comes with their netbook/PC/Laptop and stick with till new one.

Yup, point stands, new netbooks and tablets will come fully compatible with new Windows 8 standards so don't worry about that.

And don't complain about features not available to you, if you don't pay for them. ;)

So, you can't use Windows 8 at all on older tablets?

I don't see why they would support it but that's not to say

Windows tablets aren't the same as Android (or iOS) ones where you get incremental updates every now and then, and there's no reason why major releases shouldn't be available to you.

Short answer No, longer awnser maybe via a hack.
W8 arm, only comes pre-installed, you cant install it yourself.

high end x86 tablets like Samsung7 slate have a high enough screen res anyway. even if they didnt, you can still install and use w8. just not metro apps (well depends on resolution as theres a few different levels once you reach 1366px wide, you get all functionality)

MS will define the minimum standards for Metro (and phones/tablets etc), and new machines will be built to those specs.

If you want to run Windows 8 on a machine that doesn't meet those specs, which may include old netbooks or tablets, then it's going to be unsupported, at your own risk, and probably not the full experience - which is what you're seeing with the CP.

It's no different to someone wanting to run Windows 7 on a 20 year old PC.

But then why not just allow the usual start menu for those that can't make use of metro? Would the option have killed them?

you have a perfectly functional start menu, with much better handling of search. its just full screen, which isnt an issue if you've gone to start button anyway.

Don't M$ realize that 98% of windows users hate consoles ?

Just what, if they hate consoles they wont even know its "from" a console, xbox was updated anyway to match w8. its all part of their cross comparability. even if its not true cross-compatibility at least the UI is.

But you aren't supposed to use Windows 8 if you don't pay for it or your device is incompatible.

As has been mentioned before, new tablets and netbooks coming out with Windows 8 pre-installed will be fully compatible, that's the only thing Microsoft has to worry about.

Windows 7 tablet users aren't able to upgrade the OS using any official means and netbook (and most laptop) users are highly unlikely to upgrade it anyway.

My head just exploded. Wait so MS in their genius thought the best idea was to take some lame console interface and port that across to their desktop operating system.

I need time to process this.

I have both and Metro UI feels nothing like XBOX UI once you sort out all the icons on the start screen.

So windows 8\metro is a console port  they will be doing it to PC games next..oh wait :D

I know your joking, but its the other way around. They added metro style UI to the xbox in ~december
