Windows 8 Consumer Preview Thread

Why should I start fiddling around with it? I want it to work, like Windows 7 does.
And I've given it a try, I don't mind it, but I find it limiting and annoying, that's my user experience of it, accept that.

Real people will feel the same way.
What do you think they'll do when they can't launch stuff?

Also, how do I lock it?

I wouldn't complain about Consumer Preview not being fully compatible with netbooks.

Afaik, all netbooks use the Windows 7 Starter version that had limited functionality so you're still getting more field to play with than you normally would.

Plus it's not a final version, probably not even aimed at netbook users. And most likely new netbooks will have higher resolution to accommodate to OS changes.

And pinning IE to the Metro start screen is no different to pinning it to the taskbar in Windows 7.

The fact is most netbooks and tablets etc are x600, limiting it is stupid.

I doubt it will be true with Windows 8 compatible netbooks and tablets.

And HOW DO I LOCK WINDOWS 8?

Winkey + L

Why are you moaning that your hardware doesn't offer full support. Or do you moan when you can't use SSD capabilities as you only have sata drives.

You can open desktop versions from metro, just pin it.
If you've deleted all icons, in metro just start typing. Then right click icon and pin to start.

It's not really a fair test putting it on a netbook, MS have stated the resolution requirement for Metro, and the majority of netbooks fall below that.

If you want to try the other features and go straight to the desktop, put a shortcut to desktop.scf in the startup folder and after a short pause the Start Screen will disappear and drop you straight into the desktop - direct from logon, without clicking anything.

Then MS should release a decent enough O/S for netbooks.
Windows 7 doesn't feel fast enough at all, Windows 8 is the only O/S I feel fine with speed wise.

Also, tablets are also x600. Touch screen PC's are the minority, which is what Metro is clearly aimed at.

I won't try it on my PC because my Xonar Drivers don't work properly.

I have no problem with Metro, I'll repeat, I just don't find it as good as I do the usual start menu.

Apart from that, Windows 8 is fine.

It works fine on net books, it's just missing a few capabilities.
New net books will have higher resolution, so won't be an issue anyway.

Urgh.
I never said it didn't work fine on netbooks, simply Metro don't work properly.
Why limit it?

You seem confused. :D

  • Bottom left corner, click on Start to go to Metro screen.
  • Click on your profile at the top right of the screen.
  • "Lock".

Not ideal as you have to move your mouse pointer a bit further but:
a) I don't see why it wouldn't be a customisable feature in the future
b) You can always use a simpler "winkey+L" method.

becuase they've decided to set some standards to ensure compatibility.
Could you imagine snap screen on low res for example.

It means people can program apps and not worry about compatibility. It makes perfect sense to limit it.

Metro apps compatibility at a best guess.

Suppose, not all seen perhaps?
I just hook my netbook upto a 22" anyway if need be.

You want to lock your machine? I've just given you 3 options?

Trying to be helpful here, so don't understand...

I got the first two, they are helpful, that last one made no sense to me, start? What start? What user? :p

But they've limited it to the more common resolution for their touch screen audience.
And netbooks, which given the O/S is lighter than Windows 7, makes perfect sense to use over that Windows 7 starter.
