Windows 8 Consumer Preview Thread

If I have a Vista / Windows Retail license and upgrade using this am I then on an OEM license and limited to re-installs? , also after upgrade can I sell Vista and W7 or are they tied into the upgrade

Will get it for my htpc I think.no need for main PC. The htpc is controlled via tablet, so the touch friendly interface would be useful

You can reinstall as many times as you want on different systems (only one install at a time of course). That's how it worked for Windows 7 upgrade. As long as you can reinstall the old Vista/7 license on another system (i.e. retail copy), you can upgrade it.

But you can't reuse the old Vista/7 licenses.

thats good news then, worth picking up a xp license from somewhere i guess if i can get it cheap :) , might replace my WHS with Windows 8

Can't say I'm that bothered or keen on win 8 but at that low price I may pick up a copy or 2, I've got 5 old os's (2 vista, 3 xp) I can 'upgrade' if I want while still keeping my windows 7 installs :)

Hopefully there will be an option that will work with it to replace the 'start menu' with a more mouse friendly option....that's my biggest gripe with it

I wonder if you could install Windows 7, not activate it, and then boot from the Windows 8 media (USB or DVD) then install that seeing as it can completely erase Windows 7 before installation if you wish.

The extra step would be a pain but if it saves money and you don't need to activate Windows 7 every time it wouldn't be so bad. If it has to be an activated copy of Windows 7/Vista/XP every time then that will be a pain however.

I think the reality is a lot of people, and especially businesses, will remain on Windows 7 and use their downgrade option. That's what I would do.

And that is why MS have released Metro in Windows 8 (or at least part of the reason). Most businesses have now upgraded to Windows 7 and will skip the next version anyway. Gives Metro 2-3 years to settle in before MS release Windows 9 (probably an updated Metro system as well) and companies upgrade to that. That means employees and IT will have much more of an idea how to use Metro.

Those of us who upgrade every cycle or buy new laptops frequently will have Win8, most people will have skipped it whatever anyway.
