Windows 8 Consumer Preview Thread

My windows 8 copy flipped out on me starting doing a restart loop and couldn't get out of it, had to restart PC, Its crashed on me 2 times also.

I realise this is a preview possibly likely to have bugs but its a bit annoying, I may just wait until the retail version is out.

It was fun to try though
 
Will the £25 Windows 8 PRO activate from an Un-activated Win XP PRO Upgrade licence?

What I'm thinking of doing is buying an XP upgrade unused and loading the Win 8 fresh but with the XP upgrade cd key? Would it work?

Also, how are these £25 versions treated, are they like retail or oem? For future pc upgrades etc?

What computer would you be using it on? A new build?

I thought the £25 was the upgrade version of windows 8. Which means that you would have to run the upgrade from within an existing windows environment, XP, Vista, 7.

For a clean install, you would need the System Builders Edition of windows 8.

Just wondering if someone who had upgraded needed to wipe their PC, could they just load win 8 on fresh once the initial upgrade had taken place? I could load xp or vista, upgrade, then wipe and do a full clean install? Possible? :)

Nobody knows yet as it doesn't come out until 26th October. The MSDN/Technet versions might be different to the £25 version. :)

No those are the versions that are already available for developers and IT departments. So the licensing is different.

At the moment it seems that if you have a qualifying product, you can upgrade online for £25 or buy a DVD at retail for £50. If you don't (presumably because you're building a new system) then you get the System Builder version but there are no pricing details of that yet.

And nobody knows if the upgrade editions do an in-place install over your existing Windows or allow you to wipe your HDD as if it was a new install.

Ah ok, thanks for the clarification :)

Not sure which way to jump, just wish they'd sell the usual retail versions for a few quid more, then I'd be happy :)

Just worried about the whole 'oh you've changed your motherboard' please give us another £50 Thankyou very much :eek:
 
The upgrade requires a qualifying, licensed OS to upgrade from. This is what the vast majority of people will buy who got their PC off the shelf or already have a version of Windows.

If you're building from scratch, the OEM version is your only option and the system builder license has been updated to reflect that. It's no longer limited to resellers.
 
Anyone here running with dual monitor setups
Im guessing it isn't possible, but is there a way to pin metro to one screen?
I have metro appearing on the 2nd screen with the desktop on my primary screen, but the moment I click anything on the desktop, metro disappears and my desktop is extended.
Ideally Id like metro on one screen and the desktop on the other?

By Metro I'm guessing you mean the Start screen? I don't think you can. It would be nice to have the option because then you could use the second screen as a dashboard.

Select the Start Screen from the corner of the desktop you want the Start Screen to appear on or if it's already open, use Win+PG UP or Win+PG DOWN to move it to the monitor you want. If you use the Win key to open the Start Screen, it will then open on the last monitor you opened it on.

You can't actually pin the Start Screen, that will disappear once you click on an app (including the desktop). But for Win 8 apps they will remain open on the monitor you have chosen - and again the Win+PG UP/PG DOWN will move the app between monitors.

Anyone running Win8 with NVidia Surround? It's a bl***y mess.

Just tried the latest 306.23's and it's barely any better than earlier drivers. Where have the options gone from Windows 7 for how it handles windows, start menu etc. And why the hell does it take so long to go from one config to another and not work reliably, at least it doesn't hang the machine now, but it may as well do.

Basically stuck with spanned desktop and no Surround if I want to use anything productively, or a Start Screen and Apps the width of an industrial length tape measure, which flicker all the time. Wouldn't be so bad if I could change between surround and spanned easily, but takes minutes to redetect monitors and then needs a reboot anyway.

It's this sort of thing that MS need to get a handle on with NVidia (and probably other partners too) if they want to avoid the same type of perceptions Vista had.
