Windows 8 Install Thread*

Ok...so when it says, keep nothing (and if you have multiple drives) does that mean it will remove everything from all drives? Or just the windows install one?

Downloading the package now so will be good to know!

So just to add my name to the list of being able to use the Pro upgrade on a bare disk with no previous version of Windows.

Literally a new SSD out of the box, installed and activated from USB stick no problem :)

Was it on a new build or on a machine that has already been used with Win 7?

Glaucus, sorry if this has been answered 10,000 times but after the initial upgrade install can that key then be used for a fresh install if say you change your mobo. you wouldnt have to reinstall win7 then upgrade to 8?

its the potential of having to do 2 installs in the future that mean i dont want to go for this upgrade option.

The key can be used but According to ms you need to reinstall w7 first, but it seems a few have already installed it with a new HDD, while other it's installed but hasn't activated.
Either way it's not worth spending the extra £80 to cut a 45min w7 install out on the odd occasion.

Also WMC page is working taken 26hours for my codes to come through though.

Hello from Windows 8 Pro on my PC, did the £25 upgrade over the net last night.

All went smoothly, took a while and about 5 reboots (another 2 reboots after installing the first 5 Windows Update patches).

Pretty good so far.

A couple of Observations...
1. Do a defrag on the OS partition to improve boot time
2. Task Manager reports my FX-8150 as a 4 core, 8 thread CPU... (Should 8 cores, 8 threads?)
3. It says the uptime of the CPU is 8 hours (I switched PC on less than an hour ago).
4. Skype 6 update/upgrade does not check correctly from within Skype - download and install is required (had to do it twice for some reason).
5. Not sure if the Skype Application and the Skype Apps from the App store integrate. they seem to be separate. Skype Application running but not logged in does not affect the Skype app from the store. Also not sure if the Skype app from the store auto starts (does not seem to be a setting to control this behaviour) so no idea what will happen if I boot PC and someone tries to call. If both are logged in, which one works. (logged in with the same credentials).

Get your google back...

6. New Windows 8 version of Asus Suite II - BIOS update failed (M5A97Pro to 1604) and FUBARED the bios. luckily I had my work laptop and spare USB key to rectify.

7. Running Open Source - Start Menu replacement - 'Classic Start menu 3.6.1' - It's OK and fits a purpose.

8. Annoying 'fix' to get F1 2011 .

I just did an upgrade from Vista home basic 64bit. It allowed me to create the USB media. I then unplugged my hard disk and installed windows 8 from the media to an SSD, which had the preview version of 8 on it. Worked no trouble.

I assume the upgrade adviser creates a verified image that know its an upgrade from a genuine version.

Now, I wonder does it match my Vista key to the USB image and the 8 key. So will that 8 key only work with that image. Meaning if I upgrade another machine I will need to download another image (which is fine if does, but keeping track will be a pain).

Hopefully any verified upgrade key will work with any verified upgrade image. If anyone has got as far as upgrading multiple machines and knows it would be useful to know.

FAQ & Error Codes
  • Can you upgrade 32bit windows 7 to 64bit Windows 8?
Yes, but you can't do this using Upgrade Assistant. If your PC has a 64-bit capable processor (CPU) but is currently running a 32-bit version of Windows, you can install a 64-bit version of Windows 8, but you'll need to buy Windows 8 as a DVD.
you can if u know someone with a win7 64bit disk, just install it , activate, run Upgrade Assistant let it download and make a dvd or usb then job you've got a win 8 64bit dvd or usb like a "full version"

Wish me luck, going to attempt an upgrade rather then a reinstall.

18:10 to 19:05 took a while, but seems to be working great.

Yeah! Windows is using my Ethernet connection as a default when communicating with my file server! Win 7 was using Wifi.

EDIT: Install messed up somewhere, new BSOD after working fine, now trying to restore 7.

You can also get the SkyDrive favourites folder back in explorer by signing in to SkyDrive using a browser and it should throw up a link at the bottom of the window for the SkyDrive download. Don't know why they removed it since it was in Release Preview like this and strangely the Metro SkyDrive app doesn't have a setting to put the integration back into explorer, but this way works.

im actually very happy how easy the upgrade was and it seems to be running great. even deleted windows.old :O

just need to find out how to turn off the beep for uac notification

Windows setup has failed

After 30 mins, is there a log file it stores somewhere to give me a clue
The setup now gives the message, something happened we're having trouble determining whether your PC can run Windows 8.

The DVD brings up a sad face and windows ran into a problem.
