Windows 8 Install Thread*

I bought the download version (just for laptop not main PC). Made an USB and ISO install disc. I did a clean install but it wouldn't let me activate with the genuine key. Then found this fix online:

Activate Windows 8 Pro Upgrade
Windows 8 users who noticed that the operating system can’t be activated after the installation may want to try the following workaround that worked to activate when installing Windows 7 using an upgrade on a clean PC.
• Open regedit by pressing Windows-q, entering regedit and selecting the result from the list of hits.
• Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Setup/OOBE/
• Change MediaBootInstall from 1 to 0
• Go back to the start screen and enter cmd there.
• Right-click Command Prompt and select to run it as administrator.
• Type slmgr /rearm on the command line and hit enter.
• Reboot Windows now.
• Run the activation utility afterwards, enter your product key to activate Windows.

Also missed the start bar so am trying this at moment: http://www.stardock.com/products/start8/

Upgraded on Friday and all running well, apart from my printer. I've a Canon iP4500, and no driver was installed and I cant find one to install anywhere. There doesn't seem to exist even a Win 7 to try, seems strange? Any ideas or help?

Had a minor hiccup on my install. Downloaded the upgrade version, put it on a USB key, rebooted and did a clean install. All went well until it told me to remove the USB key and reboot. Wouldn't boot, kept hanging on one of the BIOS boot screens and I couldn't even get into the BIOS setup pages.

This is on a Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5, a bit of googling and it turns out I was getting error 23, something to do with IDE items being in the boot sector and I've got AHCI selected...

So, unplug SSD, reboot and get into BIOS, change back to IDE, plug SSD back in again and reboot and everything is working. Only I'm now stuck in IDE not AHCI mode...

Fixed it by running the Win8 set up again but this time creating an ISO and burning this to a DVD. Worked perfectly the second time around.

My printer driver installed when I switched on the printer, was very impressed! I've got a networked printer (Canon MP560), switched it on and it suddenly popped up as a device.

Oh, and a minor useful tip: If you have 2 step authentication switched on for your google account, and you want to avoid having to set up an application specific password for Chrome Sync, just ignore the first login it prompts you with, sign into Gmail with your authenticator code and then when it asks if you want to turn on Chrome sync using the account you've just logged in to gmail with answer yes!

Having an issue getting display driver to work? Upgraded from win7 64bit to win8 pro and I had 12.11 drivers and now it wont let me run the install?
AB is failing to see gpu and so is GPU-z

Too many teething problems for comfort. Microsoft really needed to get their house in order for this one. Coming from Win 7 this feels like a huge kick in the balls, to put it nicely.

The release previews have been going for what feels like an age now, how some of these gripes slipped through is quite the surprise.

Think I will just wait for SP1, then maybe look again.

Has anyone managed to get GPU-Z working in this yet?

None of my other tools like Core Temp , CPU Z etc worked neither but then this is just clicking on them inside a folder on the desktop, as you do.

You are using generic hardware that will have thousands of installs of windows 8 on. Install windows 8 at stock clocks then recheck your over clock.

Don't babble on about how perfect your rig is either. A system teetering on the edge of stability can do weird things.

brought it like a hr a ago

made a usb boot drive while buying it

rebooted , changed device to usb priority and took and ten minutes to install I guess no problems and very slick.

things seem a bit different but its new :p

I installed Windows oem pro over the weekend & i'm enjoying it so far but i have a problem. It seems to take way longer than win7 to boot, the only thing i have noticed was that in my bios boot settings i have bootloader?,samsung ssd(This has win8 on it) & my raptor mechanical drive. Can any tell me if windows 8 pro adds the bootloader?, win 8 was installed on a brandnew ssd and will only boot if the bootloader is selected as first boot device if i select the win 8 install it will not boot?

Thanks.

I have a question!

I am running a retail copy of Windows 7 x64. My parents are running an OEM copy of Windows XP SP3. I would like to upgrade to Windows 8 x64. After I do this, would I be able to give my retail copy of Windows 7 to my parents for them to use? I just don't think they'd get on with Windows 8...

No, you upgrade your license to win8.

I put it on my parents and my mum was flying along in about 30mins. Was loving the free games in the store and having no isues jumping between desktop for family tree and office and metro for games/music etc.

I showed her dkydrive and she said how much do we need, so I had a look and she instantly got her card out and paid the £16 a year for more storage.

I also set up a live account for them(without admin, although I did give them the admin password), so if they do break it loads of settings are synced and off course refresh/reset.

The store and live tiles where her favorite, she can know find safe software easily and install it knowing there won't be issues. And like the weather app live tile and Callander.

Thanks man.

I guess I will push them into the unknown! I will get them a SSD too, and will want to get a fresh install of Windows 8 x64 on it. Think there is info of how to do so from XP SP3 within this thread.

Thinking about doing this upgrade route...ive WIn 7 Home 64 bit so im assuming I get Win 8 Home 64 Bit?

Anyway about the install, do I have to format the HDD? Or does this install do all that? And what happens to all my files on the HDD at the minute, they get wiped? Im talking game installations, pictures, ad hoc documents etc
