Windows 8 Install Thread*

Was very impressed with how quick the install process is, less than 10mins I think.
The price is also excellent at £25 to upgrade to Pro Media Centre, even from XP OEM.

Unconvinced as to the merits of the OS itself as yet but they've certainly priced it at a level that should get enthusiasts taking a punt on it.

First install attempt I opted to keep all of my apps and settings.

Bad idea.

Nothing worked. Literally nothing.

GPU-Z, Origin, Steam etc all had permission issues and would not run.

Second install attempt everything seemed fine and dandy, until I installed the latest nVidia drivers.

Windows rebooted me to a black screen where I could just see the mouse cursor.

Sorry Windows 8, your going in the bin never to be seen on my PC again.

Isnt that nvidias fault. The permission thing sounds like it had the wrong owner which is a pain, it can be altered with some right click properties malarkey in security tab
steam has no problem in win8 afaik

meanwhile Ive given up, latest install attempt has wiped out an entire partition lol. lucky I ghosted

Too many teething problems for comfort. Microsoft really needed to get their house in order for this one. Coming from Win 7 this feels like a huge kick in the balls, to put it nicely.

The release previews have been going for what feels like an age now, how some of these gripes slipped through is quite the surprise.

Think I will just wait for SP1, then maybe look again.

Has anyone managed to get GPU-Z working in this yet?

None of my other tools like Core Temp , CPU Z etc worked neither but then this is just clicking on them inside a folder on the desktop, as you do.

Same no issues with any of those programs here.

To show they work.

No issues getting anything to work so far, only thing is a bit annoying is it putting in Nvidia drivers on it's own, no way to unistall them, have to use the custom install to do a clean install, also one minor issue is in battlefield 3 is that the refresh rate in game is 59.94hz instead of 60hz, but other than that oh and disabling that annoying UAC, it's quite a nice OS so far, no need for metro though and never really have to use it, on the occasion I have ended up in it, I just pin the program to task bar for future use.

Well after reading so many posts where people say they have clean installed using the upgrade iso on a blank drive I tried it and failed. Once into windows the activation center said my key was for upgrades only. So I had to go back to the start and install windows7 first, activate it then do the whole windows 8 install again and this time it worked. So not sure how other have done it but it didn't work for me.

did you chose "keep nothing" in the options and do a usb install?

there is also a reg edit you can do if you get a upgrade key failure...

Windows 8 users who noticed that the operating system can’t be activated after the installation may want to try the following workaround that worked to activate when installing Windows 7 using an upgrade on a clean PC.

Open regedit by pressing Windows-q, entering regedit and selecting the result from the list of hits.
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Setup/OOBE/
Change MediaBootInstall from 1 to 0
Go back to the start screen and enter cmd there.
Right-click Command Prompt and select to run it as administrator.
Type slmgr /rearm on the command line and hit enter.
Reboot Windows now.
Run the activation utility afterwards, enter your product key to activate Windows.

confirmed as working - http://www.ghacks.net/2012/10/27/windows-8-upgrade-clean-install-possible/

im another that did a upgrade and kept all personal settings. only thing i did was upgrade my gfx driver to 12.10 (was running 12.8) and tell win8 to run trixx as a admin in metro to get it working again. gpu-z/steam/origin/cpu-z etc all working brilliantly.

Here's what I did,
1, used the assistant from within win7 and chose keep nothing, downloaded then created DVD ISO.
2, Burned disk,
3, removed all other drives from system and placed in brand new SSD.
4, Installed win 8.
5, after install checked activation centre, not activated.
6, Entered CD key, got message saying something like "your key is for an upgrade to win8 you cannot use it for fresh install"
7, Did the Reg key edit posted above base on previous instruction from win7 upgrade ( but didn't do the command prompt bit, which I'm assuming was my failing).
8, Tried activation again, still nothing.

So, in short, it didn't work first time for me having followed the same steps as others (DVD not USB though) but I didn't do the reg edit correctly.

BTW< Nutella, thansk for posting the full instruction above, I will make a note of this for next time.

no worries mate, hope it helps. i was torn between the installs and wimped out and did a upgrade install but i would dearly like to know if this all works in case i need to do a future install thats fresh. found that whilst researching :)

just bought another copy of win8 upgrade and tried installing on my laptop but I just get a black screen after the first part of the install....

I don't understand this?...I have Steam and Origin (just did 2 hours of ME3 MP)running fine,GW2,Hardware Monitor,cpu-z,Pea Zip,Ashampoo 11,CCleaner and dozens more programs and games all running without issues even with my CPU overclock of 4.4GHz.

Did the upgrade yesterday on my rig and love it so far, except for stuttering!!!

Did the upgrade today on my step-dad's Dell Inspiron Sandy Bridge based laptop...once the install was over all I got was a black screen. After 1.5 hours I ended up rebooting it and was greeted with a blue screen saying Windows 8 failed to install and Win7 was being restored. Apparently this problem is not unique to me.
