I think I'm going to take the plunge tonight. I have a couple of queries.
What is the best free software to make a backup image of my SSD? I need a backup of my current install in case pro tools doesn't work.
My second question is this - Say I install win 8 and find out pro tools doesn't work I will have to revert back in windows 7. What happens to my license? Will I still be able to run windows 7 or will my license essentially be binned with the upgrade?

Just to note If you run the upgrade assistant on XP SP3 it will only offer you the 32bit version of 8 to buy (the retail upgrade DVD works fine ofc).

I had that, it also seemed to crash my network connection. Closing the assistant and starting again brought things back to normal.
Did that, now its asking me to buy it again ffs

Having problems with installer, which is strange as Release Preview 8400 worked fine.
Made a USB and DVD (verified) using the assistant.
USB doesn't boot, but is seen in BIOS.
Files/directories on USB:

setup.exe
Only options in BIOS for DFI LanParty Juniour P45-T2RS are boot from USB-ZIP, USB-Floppy, USB-CDROM; and changing mode of memory stick from auto to FDD or HDD.
The DVD loads with the new Windows logo then switches to a blank purplish screen with mouse cursor only.

I'm planning on upgrading my fathers computer to windows 8 (if the upgrade advisor doesn't have a problem with the not genuine version of windows XP pro that is running on it) and since I want to put the 64-bit version on and not the 32-bit version that would be provided, I was wondering if any of these ideas would get around it.
I was thinking of installing the 64-bit version of windows 7 (not activated) and using the USB drive with my windows 8 upgrade (which is a 64-bit version) to do the upgrade using the key for his upgrade (I've heard (from here I think) that windows 8 can be upgraded from a version of windows 7 that hasn't been activated), or could I just create a DVD from the files that are still on my laptop (they're still there) and do the upgrade that way (I'm not sure if booting from a USB drive is possible on his computer).

I created a 64-bit installer CD of Win8 last month. I recently used it to install Win8 onto a computer that had a fresh install of WinXP32 which was not activated because I couldn't get the appropriate NIC drivers.
All went fine and Win8 activated on that machine.

I forgot to mention that when the OS was installed by my sister, she split the hard drive into two partitions (one containing the operating system and the other hadn't even been formatted) and I'm planning on putting it back as just one partition which I don't think I can sort out in it's current state.
