windows 8 start menu is back

Time for me to eat my hat, they just showed and announced start menu is back with live tile integration.

Thank the lord for that.

Was it tasty? :p

You seem to have no sense of humour so no point in me explaining it.

Considering your demeaning of people who weren't happy about its removal as "lazy" and "dumb" and endless condescending comments such as this one you can hardly blame his sense of humour "failure"

Looks like you want to start a debate that's fine,my mum can use Win8 just fine at almost 80 and she was using XP and Win7 before and does not know much about PCs,so yes I can call them dumb and lazy where I've seen people that can use it fine, sure you can dislike something even Win8 that's fine but does not take away the fact some people are lazy in general to learn or change to new ways.

For the record I changed/adapted all the way from DOS to latest Windows and Linux (with no PC training)if I can then anybody can.

FYI with respect I stand by that some people want to be spoon fed because they are lazy.

It'll be interesting to see how they handle Win9,10 if we get any major changes.

The dislike of the screen doesn't really come from people being unable to or unwilling to learn it... it's that changing from the Start Menu to something which took up the entire screen provided literally zero benefit if you're a PC user. It didn't solve any of the fundamental flaws that have existed in the Start Menu ie. the legacy of supporting the mess within all programs. At least on the old menu that was hidden away, now these icons are randomly placed all over the start screen.

Their proposed solution actually looks like a pretty decent middle ground.

A lot of users have not bothered to learn the Win8 properly, quite a few have decided within minutes or hours etc, eitherway the "middle ground" as you call it should keep them happy until we get Win9 etc...

Seriously, is this debate still going on? Even when Microsoft as good as admit it themselves that they screwed up.

Personally as long as in future there is an option to select between the old style Start Menu and the Start Screen to keep both camps happy (and because the Start Screen really is fine for touch screens) then I really don't care.

Glad it's back to be honest.

It makes it much easier to give to businesses like this. I also don't see the problem with having a choice. If Microsoft want users to have the ability to use tiles then that's fine it just should be optional.

When the most used apps are stuff like Classic Start Menu and Start8 then it must be time to rethink the decision and give the users choice.

Windows 8 has tanked

No it hasn't, it has become Microsoft's second fastest selling O/S in history, dwarfing 3.11, 95, 2000, XP, Vista.

Considering Windows 7 was eagerly/desperately awaited by users who hated Vista and wanted to upgrade from XP (which was 8 years old) and yet it only sold ~40% more copies in its first six months than Windows 8 which was not eagerly/desperately awaited and in fact launched at a time when people were perfectly happy with Windows 7, then it would easily be argued that 8 hasn't just been a big success it has been a much bigger success than anyone could have predicted, despite the naysayers.

Don't be so melodramatic. It's not just resistance for the sake of it, the lack of a Start menu has clearly completely changed how people have to use their PCs without really giving a good reason for it.

It really hasn't

Start: Pops up and lets you launch pinned apps, search, open common folders and navigate the maze that is programs. While it's up you can see your desktop but not interact with it.

Metro: Pops up and lets you launch pinned apps (a lot more of them), search (better), open common folders (more of them) and easily navigate the non-pinned programs. While it's up you can not see your desktop.

The issue was in peoples heads.

well with the start menu back what will people moan about now?

Well I'd rather have had a proper next-gen mouse and keyboard interface than a step back, but at least it's better than pure touch Metro.

I still maintain Microsoft will fork development eventually, otherwise they'll lose the desktop market. All that's happening at the moment is they're trying to put it right as cheaply as possible - but it won't work in the long run.

Times change as well, desktop PCs now have competition like tablets, phones etc,all getting better and smarter http://www.businessinsider.com/the-pc-market-to-shrink-for-years-2014-3 .

I could thow in Linux as well stealing some Windows users but end of the day it's great to have options for the consumers out there.

Fastest selling of fewer copies?

I mean seriously. Can you work out the issue with what you put just there?

XP still has a higher market share.

Start: You can still see it however, meaning that it feels less disjointed. If the modern start screen just went over the top of what is shown onscreen it would not be as bad. And what maze? It's sorted by program name or the program group with the name YOU would have set up for it.

Metro: Actually you can pin quite a lot of apps on the older start menu. The search maybe a little better (but how hard would it have been for MS to tweak the search and leave the Start Menu? That's not a Start Screen advantage, that's a tweaked search function advantage, which is different) and I always found it easy to navigate to non-pinned programs in the old Start menu.

Stop spouting tripe. I am sure MS will leave the option for either interface, so I'm not sure why you are bleating on about your beloved Start Screen, unless MS have announced they are removing that too?
