windows 8 start menu is back

Fixed. Seriously I do wonder if some users on this forum actually talk to people in the outside world sometimes....

And I guess the power button is what a lot of people wanted, personally it doesn't bother me either way.

Funny, the people i talk to daily in person get on well with the metro screen, its only really computer forums I see the hatred for it.

Nope, the majority of people who tried Windows 8 properly, liked the new interface and saw it as an improvement. The people who hate it mostly consist of either people still using XP/Vista/W7 who hate the idea of Metro, or people who installed W8 then installed a Start menu straight away.

I've used every Microsoft OS since DOS 6.22 days, when I first tried Win8 beta I was thinking where is the power and shutdown options (took me about 15 to 20 mins to find first time).

Once you know your way around it's not an issue ,Win8.1 etc refined things and to be honest nothing really hard about any modern OS especially Win8/8.1 etc..

Metro again dead simple to use and yes you can love it or hate it,personally I use it because its a tool to be used and I can have everything within one or two clicks max, also made a change from the same old start menu we see since Win95 to Win7,Win9 should be interesting on what they do with UI and start menu etc.

Regardless I adapt easy enough without a moan, just like I adapted to Metro and rest of Win8.1 and previous operating systems.

Roll on Win9 I wonder what they will change or have new ,can't wait to see.

PLEASE call it Windows 8.11 for Workgroups. :D

I know it's stupid to do so but just for the lol.

you really think microsoft have backtracked because of the "minority" whinging on forums? :/

it's all about the $$$. i expect some of the larger OEMS/customers/partners had a little something to do with it...

One would hope most businesses are already running 7 seeing as XP will be unsupported in just a few days time!

Lots of huge companies and organisations are still on XP.

As for the Start menu, it's a positive step towards making Win8 intuitively usable again for many, but as far as I'm concerned it's too little far too late. My experience with Windows 8 on my notebook has been nothing but poor (and ultimately, a lot of that can be traced back to the integration of 'Metro' in one way or another), so I have no intention of upgrading my PC to Windows 8 for the foreseeable future. I had XP, Vista and 7 pretty-much from launch but at this point in time I think I'll be skipping 8.

It's a bit of a shame, as there are some nice desktop features that I'd quite like to take advantage of, but I'll go without for the time being.

This, now we get lumbered with a 1990's interface once more thanks to the unsilent minority >.>

Lay off the drugs.. Windows 8 has tanked and even slowed the PC market down, not just because it was **** but because everyone was waiting for tablets to take over the world like Microsoft and their Metro loving fanboys said they would.

The fact that so many programmers are profiting from start menu replacements should also tell you that not even all that many Windows 8 users are happy with it.

Bit hard on the guy,I could say its not rocket science to use without a Start menu and far from hard ,end of the day I welcome change and do feel the old Start menu should be replaced with something new and more modern, you can argue they did not get it right first go with their first hybrid OS but its early days especially with Win9 not far,Win7 had almost 20 years to get things where they are with that.

I do feel Windows PC users nowadays are moaning way too much over silly things.

Regardless I think the Aero fans will be next queuing up for their Aero back,I have an idea lets stay on Win7 forever and do no changes with UI or any progress even if it does take time, that way all those dumb users that can't adapt or change can stay on Win7 forever and smart ones move to Linux where they embrace new ideas/changes and most important thing have patience.

To end it all I'll say the day I can't use a modern Windows OS without the old Start menu is day I go over to consoles for good, think I can handle off/on power button or does that need a mod? :D

Don't be so melodramatic. It's not just resistance for the sake of it, the lack of a Start menu has clearly completely changed how people have to use their PCs without really giving a good reason for it. MS offered absolutely no help whatsoever to the user in getting to grips with the huge changes introduced in Windows 8, so you can't really be surprised that people have reacted the way they have. It was only in 8.1 that they added a few pop-up things showing you how to swipe between apps etc, which is especially unhelpful when you're using a mouse and keyboard. The lack of on-screen prompts (e.g menu bars, buttons etc until you swipe for them) might make sense on a tablet with a small display but has zero value when you're using a mouse.

Ultimately, MS wanted a uniform interface and design across an entire family of products - Windows, Windows Phone and Xbox - but spent very little time considering how these different products are used and what interfaces the user has with them.

I do feel a lot of Windows users have got lazy and dumber and need to be spoon fed ,that's all I've to say  .

Win8.1SE sounds better ;) .

Windows 8.1 OSR 2? :D

Now with added USB support y'know!

[Edit] Damn, Win95 didn't even have AGP support at release, never knew that and damn that makes me feel old.
