Windows 8 - the Features, Applications and News Thread

Yes I agree - about 15 mins.

However on my main machine I have the profiles on another drive - SSD boot drive a bit small. As a result, I cannot update and keep my apps and settings. Its in effect a clean install so I will wait for the edition to buy is out and do it then but I am betting for me it will be more like a half to a whole day given the stuff on my machine and the time to get updates etc.

Most things are easy on windows 8. The real issue is that its unintuative. Ie: no, adding stuff to metro isn't a ball ache at all, but it does require you to know where to look because it sure as hell isn't obvious and thats a reoccuring theme in windows8. That's going to be the real issue for Joe average,IMO.

Ummm I might give it another try in a few weeks/months and see if I can get the hang of it.

I was like this with vista tho, I must have gone back to xp about 3 times before sticking with vista. Change and me dont mix too well:D

Alt F4 works

I need to install Win 8 again now lol

You have to make sure the shortcut you make goes into one of the shortcut folders, ie accessories, system tools etc, then get metro up and start to type your new shortcut and it will appear, then pin it to metro. But I have yet to figger out how to make metro search in other locations for shortcuts

I dont know how you close ie, I just get metro up and then close it from the left side of the screen. But if you go into the internet tools, I think there is a option to set it so it opens up on the desktop instead.

Cheers I'll try that out.

To close metro apps, just swipe down from the top to the bottom (holding left mouse button)

I think MS should give us all a free touch mouse if they want to make the interface more user friendly because with a mouse it isn't obvious. But ta I'll try that out when I install it again through virtual box this time.

I don't blame you tbh. Another one is naming the groups of icons in the metro menu. Nowhere obvious does it tell you how to do this or even that it's possible.

It's not obvious as it's a new OS and OS generally don't tell you how to do things, you need to know.I expect the RTm will have a tutorial on it.

Well, no they don't. But I'm not talking about tutorials on screen, im saying it should be intuitive... but it is not. hiding the option to name groups of metro apps in the view all mode, which itself isn't obvious as it's only a small minus icon in the bottom right, is not helpful. right clicking on an app within a group and having the option to name it in the bar that appears at the bottom makes far more sense. That isn't holding your hand and telling you how to do things, but it isn't hidden away in obscurity either. I never had these sorts of frustrations with any other microsoft OS.

That makes much more sense to me. Right click and get all the options relating to the content. None of this burying options in other menus/screens.

But that's just one example. My issues with windows 8 pretty much all revolve around metro, which I barely use, so there you go.

But it's only intuitive on old windows. As it hadn't changed since win95, I would say to a new comer windows is very unituitive. iOS is slightly better, but even that's not obviouse. The amount of people who don't know the multiple touch combinations is huge.

That looks neat,, might have to give it another go..hehe

there is none of those options in james miller's posts when you click on the bottom right. All I get is show apps. How do you create a new group?

Is anyone running dual screen?

I'm finding that
a) The start screen doesn't always open on the same screen. I've figured out you can choose which screen to open it on, but sometimes it changes seemingly by itself?
b) You can't have metro on one screen, and use an app on the other screen

I'm also having issues adding my music library (via network drive) to the media library. I've created a symbolic link and it's added files to the library - but not to the Music App.

Drag apps into an empty space on the metro screen to start anew group. Zoom out and right click on the group to have the option to name it. (from memory)

to create a group you just drag and drop the tiles wherever you want. to name the group, you have to click bottom right, right click on the group you created and THEN you can name it.

....intuitive, huh?

My screenshot is a dirty mockup I did to show where the option, imo, should be. sorry about that :p (proves a point though....)

Enabling boot straight to desktop for power users really should be on MS's list of priorities for initial updates. Otherwise they're going to start alienating sysadmins right from the off.
