Windows Home Server

My Files show up as the normal file sizes not 4KB files. This is when browsing to the file location d:\shares\ via admin console plugin

OK I got the UPS working. I just needed to turn it off and leave it off from the wall for 30 mins. Then Hold in the test button for 10 seconds to reset it.:o:D

Installed the addin Grid Junction

All is good now.

Now for the BIG question.

I copied some MUSIC and VIDEOS over to the server via USB external drive.

I logged on using remote desktop and copied direct from USB drive to

D:\shares\Music
D:\shares\Videos

Now having read up on it people have said this is not the correct way and it should be avoided. While others have said that they have done this without issue's.

How do I know if everything is OK?

Apparantly someone said to check:

Well I have checked and none of the files are 4KB in size when I look in my D:\shares\Videos folder for example.

Is this pre landing Zone stuff? I know that this was scrapped in PP1.

Should I be worried?

Everything seems to be running okand balancing well. I have oodles of space on my SYS drive left.

Could anyone check the file size in the D:\shares\Sharename areas please?

I want to get this right and its all so damn confusing.

If push comes to shove then I suppose I can copy the data from the unc paths shares to USB drive again.Delete all the data in the shares and in D:\shares\Sharename and copy back directly through the UNC path...

Please help I'm a WHS noob:cool:

As we discussed on the other thread, copying directly is a big no-no for the tombstones. And should always be done using the UNC path so these don't get broken for drive extender/duplication.

One important thing to remember is that the DE tombstones will not report their true size, but the size of the file they are pointing to. All tombstones are 4k, but will always report in Windows the size oif the file they are linking to. To prove it just try backing up your D:\ drive directly - with the default MS backup program and you'll soon see that they are very small files and not your real data!

The main thing is you can see and use your data, so you know it's there. I would live with that.

But if this is going to eat away at you, I'd delete the existing files from the UNC path and restore from your other drive.

Yeah I think that guy I quoted was talking was talking balls now.The tombstones have all the meta data of the original file.Including their size even if they are only 4kb.:)

Any way that's what I have done.I have deleted all the data from the shares and recopied using the UNC path.

All is good.:) Touch wood.

The server will be backed up anyway to a external drives now.I'm so glad the data I lost was just DVD rips rather than home Videos .

Its true it takes something like a dead hard drive to drive people on into getting their data sorted.

I have to say that WHS is very cool.I just wish I had used the UNC path first lol.

I'm going to stop using remote desktop to and just copy to the unc path shares over wired lan.

Is it true that WHS boots without a GFX card?

Hi guys! Newbie here

I just acquired a version of WHS and i see it comes with 3 CD's...

I want to install on it on my pc first to try it, which already has a separate partition. Is it as easy as installing it on the other partition? Will i still have the option to dual boot with xp?

Cheers

No. It will wipe all drives it finds during setup.

If you only have one HD then try it in a VM - though it will be severely limited and I wouldn't trust my data to it.

But if you've gone out and bought WHS, I'd have thought you'd have a need for it and understood how you were going to set it up? What do you have in mind that you'd want to keep XP on the same disk?

Depending on how many machine you have, ESET (Nod32) do a very nice package that covers your server and 4 or 5 other machines - I'm saving up to buy it as we speak!
.

Initially put a test version of AVG on my WHS, then went and bought the four pack of NOD32.

Found out then that the uninstall of AVG doesn't work (nor the help tips they give)and had to re-install WHS.

Nod32 installed on all PC's and WHS now. Only problem I currently have is that MyMovies won't work through NOD32 as it is being blocked. Trying to find a way to open it up, anyone have any tips?

I love the fact it streams FLAC files and MKV's straight to the PS3

Thanks for the link:)

I used a cheap noname SIL3114 based card with no problems for a while.

Hi,

i'm pretty sure I have the same RAId card and find that when I hibernate the server, as it comes up about 1 in 4 times it will just freeze at startup.

All I need to do is restart the box and it is fine, just annoying. Anyone else get the problem ?

Only happened since I put hte RAID card in,

I need to try the PS3 addin. I've not had the PS3 switched on for about 4 months - so will be a good reason for a play.

My current addins;

- WHS Disk Management
- My Movies
- WHS Toolkit
- Remote Notification
- Perfectdisk10

On the other box I've also got LightsOut but need to properly play with this.

There used to be a nice feature in the old MS WHS toolkit where you could define, individually for each client PC, how long before a missed backup would cause a yellow or red warning. I'd really love an addin for this feature.

Could people post a screen shot of their Console with WHS Disk Management addin installed please.

I would like to compare how the data is stored over your disks compared to mine.

Thanks

Might be a bit slow in getting a screeny, but I can tell you on the 3 WHS I've got then it tends to keep the system disk low % and balances across your other drives, when they are full it will start filling the system disk up.

When you add a new disk it tends to fill that up gradually, but not balancing off the other drives.

i.e. normal situation

Sys: Low%
Pool Disks: High%

or

Sys: Low%
Pool Disks: High%
New disks: Medium%

What are you seeing on yours?

One of my 1Tb drives failed. Although, the more I look, it just looks like the controller had a hissy fit on 1 drive since everything bar a full in depth surface scan is fine!
