Windows Home Server

Yep as long as its got drivers for windows 2003 (check manufacturer's website before purchase) it will work fine

Provided it's not the system drive and you have enough space on your other disks then just select "Remove" from the Server Storage tab on the Windows Home Server Console.

It will then confirm that no files will be lost and then it moves them off to the other drives.

Once it's emptied the drive you can replace it with a new drive, which is exactly what I did.

I've installed it this evening and all seems ok so far.

Nice feature where u can see pictures, movies etc for local pc and server in same explorer window.

Yup it's really easy, it's nice when you're moving to a higher capacity device, all I tend to do is put the new device in and add it to the pool then yank the old drove, job done :)

Trouble I've got is that I'm using a ML115 G5 server which only has 4 SATA connections and I am using them all! Means I must upgrade before I run out of space to move my data around!

Best Anit Virus for Home Server?

I'm currently running a mix of AVG and NOD32 on my PCs and need to buy new licences so I was going to buy a multi pack to have a consitent AVG/Security suite across all PC's.

Out of the AVG's on the market is there one that is better suited for WHS out of AVG or NOD32?

Taff

I cant get my APC 1000 Smart UPS to connect with WHS any ideas?

When I pulg it in I just get unknown device.

I have tried the powerchute software and its still not detected.

I know its working fine has I had it in the same system when it was running windows 7

Depending on how many machine you have, ESET (Nod32) do a very nice package that covers your server and 4 or 5 other machines - I'm saving up to buy it as we speak!

Funny you mention your UPS Easyrider - my belkin was recognised but doesn't load the drivers properly for some reason - must try it again.

Hmm, I have the APS 350VA one from OcUK and the powerchute software works fine, so at least the software works. Must be a glitch somewhere?

Oh, I use Avast! For WHS. Works great, has its own console button as well and checks that all the clients connected have correct databases etc.

OK I got the UPS working. I just needed to turn it off and leave it off from the wall for 30 mins. Then Hold in the test button for 10 seconds to reset it.:o:D

Installed the addin Grid Junction

All is good now.

Now for the BIG question.

I copied some MUSIC and VIDEOS over to the server via USB external drive.

I logged on using remote desktop and copied direct from USB drive to

D:\shares\Music
D:\shares\Videos

Now having read up on it people have said this is not the correct way and it should be avoided. While others have said that they have done this without issue's.

How do I know if everything is OK?

Apparantly someone said to check:
"Since you copied directly to the D:\shares\Sharename folders, you were operating outside of WHS. The risk you run is that you may create real files in the shares, rather than tombstones. In this case Drive Extender won’t be able to move those files off of the primary data partition.

All files that are located within D:\shares\Sharename should be 4KB tombstones only, no matter how big the real file is. The actual files are located on other drives that WHS accesses through mount points that are in C:\DE\ (in a single drive system the files are stored directly on the D drive).

To make sure that the files in D:\shares\Sharename are tombstones only, right click on a file, then Properties and look at the Size on disk. If the Size on disk value is more than 4KB then the DE Migrator is not coming along and migrating the actual file to the other drives, and is not creating the tombstone.

So the only way I can see that you can rectify this is to take the incorrect data out of the shares from D:\shares\Sharename into a temp directory and then move it through to the actual share the proper way."

Well I have checked and none of the files are 4KB in size when I look in my D:\shares\Videos folder for example.

Is this pre landing Zone stuff? I know that this was scrapped in PP1.

Should I be worried?

Everything seems to be running okand balancing well. I have oodles of space on my SYS drive left.

Could anyone check the file size in the D:\shares\Sharename areas please?

I want to get this right and its all so damn confusing.

If push comes to shove then I suppose I can copy the data from the unc paths shares to USB drive again.Delete all the data in the shares and in D:\shares\Sharename and copy back directly through the UNC path...

Please help I'm a WHS noob:cool:
