Windows Home Server

I'll be setting up my home server soon and was planning on installing Vail. However what has drawn me to WHS in the first place was DE. I only read today that it has been totally pulled from Vail and therefore is not a route I want to go any more.

So I have been looking at alternatives and interestingly there are now some Linux options starting to offer some of the same features. As I am a bit of a Linux noob and WHS looks to be easier to setup would you recommend I still buy WHS1 or do you think it is too close to end of life? It does look like it will still be supported for a while.

WHS, iMAc and Printing

Hi All,

Thought I'd post this in hear as well as in the Apple forums.

Wonder if you can help me.

I have a Canon ip6700 Printer connected to my Windows home server.

Bought myself a new imac and added the printer, it can be seen on the printers/network/WHS.

Loaded the appropriate drivers for it and it all looked good.

If I want to print it appears in the printer choices, and will accept being printed to.

But, even though all jobs go to the print queue, nothing gets printed they all go into a waiting status. On Hold (Authentication Required) - I have tried to create a specific user name on the WHS and attach via this.

This printer will work fine from a Windows based laptop/desktop on the network, so wondering if there is something else I need to do to get this working.

Cheers

Solution to stalled print jobs on WHS :

1. Login to your WHS via Remote Desktop
2. Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Services
3. Find the "Print Spooler" service, double-click to view properties
4. Select the "Log On" Tab
5. UNCHECK "Allow service to interact with desktop"
6. Click OK
7. Restart the service

I am looking at setting a server up, using a 1.6 atom and 2GB DDR2. Will this be fine for streaming HD content etc?

Can you add external USB drives to the storage pool?

Any tip's on setting it up etc? :D

Hi Easy,

Thanks for the help so far, it got me further but not quite there yet.

After applying the changes listed above, the job spooled out to the printer on the WHS and I could see it in a state of spooling on the server print queue, it stayed that way(spooling) for about 5 minutes before disappearing without a print coming out of the printer.

Tried local printing from the WHS direct to the printer and that went quickly from spooling to printing then the print came out successfully.

Looks like there something else I need to do to get the iMac working, any further tips appreciated.

Cheers

Should be fine.. You can add USB drives to the pool..

Does anyone know the plan for Vail, Ok there is no DE but is this the end? what's the solution for all this if any? I heard they are going to say something at CES but surely you'd give an answer to all this when they announced the lack of DE.

/Confused.. Am I missing something?

Unless they announce a new core feature for the server 2018rc2.whs2.cloudserver family then I think we're going to be flat out of luck and need to use either 3rd party software or hardware raid devices.

I would get one of the HP MIcroservers as it is perfect for Windows Home Server.

At the moment there is £100 cash back making the purchase price about £89 + VAT !!! :D I bought mine on the 30th November when they were doing £50 cashback.....DOH!!!! if only I'd a known!!

Of course, disk real estate will be extra.....

Can't link as it is to a competitor.

advice please.
i want to change to os drive in my acer easystore for a smaller drive.
basically i currently have 1tb as os, 2x 1tb as storage.
i have a samsung f1 320gb which i would like to use as os drive and put the 1tb into storage.

what is the best way of doing this? i have recovery disc.
i have read that i can clone disc but also read that this causes a lot of issues.

any advice please. (im a noob to whs)

You don't need to just add the 320gb to the storage pool you will be effectively doing the same thing

I'm just reading up about WHS, it's basically Win2003 underneath? I can install any additional software etc?

Is anyone using the HP MicroServer for streaming to a PS3 (PS3 Media Server) or for streaming content where transcoding on the fly is required, iPad for example using ffmpeg etc. I'm unsure if the system can handle and keep up with bare 720p let alone 1080p

Thanks :D
