For those that don't know about Server 2008, it's basically a stripped down, modular version of vista and many people prefer it (including myself). I find it
faster and just better overall.

Here's the deal, if you're a student, you can receive a free copy of Windows Server 2008. Just go to this site, and register. If your school is not on the list, follow the instructions at the bottom. You do need to send proof that you're a college student(a screenshot of your schedule or school ID works). Mine has been approved and I am downloading it as I post this.

The download is 32-bit only, however the key they give you works for 64bit as well(at least that's what i hear), I will try it later this wknd.

You can download the 64bit version here:
Download details: Windows Server 2008 Standard

Same, took me to Athens site w/e that is.

Is this free to students for life? Once you got it thats it you got it forever.

Same tried it for my sister but get "athens authentication point". Ah if you select "alternative login" you can reach your university log in page. Will check it out later.

Dreamspark has had this and other software avalible to students for ages. To answer some questions, yes it is a perpetual licence (it lasts forever not just when you're a student) but it can't be used for commercial purposes.

As for authentication, it'll use your uni/colleges preferred authentication method what ever that may be.

Do many people actually run server 2008 instead of say Home Premium or Ultimate, and use it for normal home use?

I graduated recently, but fortunately my uni log-in still works. :)

Downloaded Server 2008, no practical use for it but it'll be interesting to try it out sometime.

Dreamspark is geared towards students of Computer Science/Development etc type courses - hence the amount of dev tools there are there.

Athens is a UK central student auth system which usually deals with literature facilities, most universities register students with Athens as well as with their own system. It's just a check to make sure you are who you are claiming to be. I believe it also works if you have an ISIC number (off your NUS card)

Obviously they have updated this as up until very recently dreamspark was offering Server 2003 rather than 2008

It lists every local college but mine :(

you don't even have to be a student to use the trial version in the 2nd link gurusan posted. you get 60 days but can reset it 3 times to get 240 days use. you don't have to register for anything at all - just download the iso and burn it to disk. :)

Yes...I do. When setting it up there are a few things you need to do to make it act a little more like Vista but overall I think it's much better.

Vista is bloated and sluggish, I have used it on all sorts of different setups and it never feels as responsive and snappy as server 08
