--- Windows Server 2008 FREE for Students!!!!! ---

Im thinking of getting this but will it be ok for my laptop?
Can anyone also tell me if there is any problems with using server 2008 over vista home pre?

Check to see if your school is there.

Mine is on the list but i just finished last year and they must delete the previous years accounts and passwords. Drat :D

Unfortunately it's not, any other way?

any recommendation on what free anti virus to use ?

AVG & avira don't work with the server edition...

ClamWin?

I have a innate dislike of using a server OS for a workstation, especially when people already have a Vista licence. There's really no point.

I agree.

Vista is a fantastic OS, and is optimised for 'the desktop'.

Yes I think I'm going to stick with Vista, as I don't want to run in to some compatibility issue and have to reformat. I guess I'll just tweak Vista lot more than I have now.

Any idea if you can get the 64 bit version, or if the key works with 64 bit media like Vista does? Might be interesting (and useful) to try out Hyper-V on an old machine with a ton of ram.

I use sophos for antivirus. Symantec Corporate works as well.

And there's nothing wrong with using a server os for a workstation. Vista eats about 300-400 cpu points in 3dmark06 and all games take a minor hit. If that doesn't bother you then by all means go and pay for Vista :) I will not dispute the fact that it's a great OS, I just don't see the point in turning down free performance :)

I see you can download either Standard or Enterprise version.I tried reading at Microsoft what the difference was but i just got pages of Microsoft self loving and promotion mixed with Techno Garbage of new names for services so i'm still none the wiser.

Vista optimized for the desktop, Server 2008 optimized for the desktop after about 15mins of playing about...

Vista was optimized for my desktop in about 10minutes, customised in no time!

you just need to know what your doing :p

no point what so ever as having Server '08 as your main workstation OS. you'll run into problems down the line, just wait :)

ok, been waiting ever since it was available...as well as owning many benches done on vista solely because of my use of the Server OS

How will I run into problems? Vista 64 apps works in Server 08, even ATi drivers, I've not ran into problems and not going to wait thats wasting time, I guess you havent tried server 2008 so you dont know that it's faster, I tried it and it was faster for the most part and when configured properly is faster than Vista since it is basically a cut down version of Vista. Most of the server functions can be disabled.

I think I know what I am doing if you where trying to imply I dont know what I am doing... I certainly know how to configure Windows Vista....
