Windows SMP Beta goes Open

The only potential issue with the Windows SMP as a service is that if you just want to stop the service (net stop), it doesn't necessarialy stop the clients from running. If you are rebooting this is not an issue. However, if you do not manually kill them, when you start the service you end up with 8 proccess running :eek:

For me this is not an issue as the machine runs 24/7. Why would I want to stop the service ;)

Just uploaded my first SMP unit :cool: beats the 2x2124's I had previously :D
Now crunching the meatier 2610, needs twice the ram of the 2652 with 85-90x4.

Ok it might not out perform the linux client - but that it's not even crunching smp units for me, so it's in the recycling bin never to return :rolleyes:

I take it you mean just log in as you would normally and then install the service?

Tried installing as a service and it doesnt work. The only thing happening in task manager is that mpiexec is using about 20% of cpu.

Ran configonly in the shortcut added service command "yes" checked the registry its there. Checked services and its on automatic and started.

Checked log and it says the client has started, see below

know bug (has already happened to me - see earlier post)

stop service (re-assign to manual)
use task manager to shut down mpiexec
now try and shutdown smpn.exe (I never could, but try anyway)
Reboot
you should now be able to open Fah dirrectly via the .exe
But you might lose your current WU (I didn't but many do)

The Offical FAQ says that running any SMP as a service is not fully surported so advise againest it.

@Rich - thanks rich save me a post (and nice to know your on the ball :D )

Edit: Just set up my second SMP on the [email protected] (via chipset :( ) here at work running a 2610 will post times and see how it compairs to snap's above.

I'm sure I tried 4 or more times without luck - as I'd just installed, I started from scratch again with an -configonly (to remove service) and uninstall (that flaged smpn for deleation).

Later that day after about 27 steps I needed to do a Ctrl+C to stop the client, (just after a step) all four threads closed instantly as did mpiexec. smpn was still running so after 5min's I shutdown. On restart the following day all was well and it picked up at 27 :D

If you right click on 'My Computer' and select manage. Go to services and select the folding service. Make sure that the service is stopped Right click and select properties. Select the 'Log on' tab and deselect the system account and select 'This account' and change it to the same user that you are running FAH as. Start the service.

I assume that you have been into the registry and added any parameters (verbosity 9 etc) as detailed in the sticky.

If I did not do this step, the client would not run as you describe.

but I'm useing AutoCAD, Outlook & Word currently, which explaines it :D

I'll close down every thing at lunch and report back the reduced timings ;)

ok I got a small problem with new work. everytime the pc downloads a new wu, it starts at 0%, runs for a few mins then all activity stops. no messages, nothing. hit ctrl -c and restart and all is well and will crunch the wu fine.

seems it needs a kick on a fresh wu to get it running propa.

any ideas

Mine was doing this a few weeks back and I made a post on the official forums about it. I never received any response. :/

However, the problem seemed to fix itself.

EDIT: Are you running on a laptop or a desktop?

38mins then 19m respectively from step 5 onwards - very intresting this use of non equal steps - but it will mess up Fahmon's ETA's/ppd fig's untill well into the 40+ steps if not beyond that.

That is unless it works out these things on the last 5 results and not a total average of all steps - anyone know?

Edit: back to 37mins - it's defernatly AutoCAD useing all my PC's resources - I'll know more tomorrow morning ;)
