Winter 2020/2021

Stop panicking people - I put my winter wheels on today - That's it the end of snow and cold weather - It was 5c today and I didn't get cold.
Very icy first thing at Tescos - no wonder the car park was empty.

Can you explain what this means?

I'm no sciencer, but the second picture looks like a deformed elephant person with a hunch has taken a little poo in the sea.

This will create a ripple effect and bring cold winds from the Atlantic to the US East Coast and the UK. Happy to be corrected.

Quiet weather day here ,cold light rain ,waves look a bit puny here in pic (Polzeath) but there were some nice fun sets coming in ,first days of new year look fine and chilly ,nice walking weather

This is why I hesitate over having a set of winter wheels made up hah - guarantee the moment I spend the money on it we get mild muck for weeks on end.

Frustrating thing is if this was say the 80s the current weather setup would almost certainly have seen a widespread white Christmas albeit not much more than a sprinkle for many and weeks of significant wintery weather (probably a bit too much) going forward with many places seeing 6+ inches of snow even in the south.

Yeah nothing but some slight frosts and the odd bit of sleet forecast here in the next few days - but certainly some interesting stuff going on weather wise - just doesn't have the depth of cold to draw on right now to produce much but that might change.

Intermittent hail showers ,slight covering of top fields ,wouldn't mind a good snow shower but slim chance

Massively generalising but those areas of high pressure (where the numbers go up 1000+ the closer to the middle of the rings you get) when positioned to the North of us (or in some cases other positions) tend to draw cold air from the arctic regions downwards towards us (and in some cases hold warmer air from the south away from us) the positions of the areas of low pressure can also have an influence on conditions in some cases being huge generators for snow when mixing cold air with other conditions such as warm moist air from further south. (Look up things like Greenland High and Scandinavian High).

One of the problems at the moment is that though the setup is very conducive to winter weather - there isn't the mass of cold around to draw from there would have been 10+ years ago - a few decades back this kind of setup would have seen moderate snow across much of the UK already with more substantial winter weather to come.

The second week of Jan onwards looks potent with some significant polar disruption but how it will unfold is another matter - IMO a lot of the cold is going to go the US's way yet again.
Thanks. Hopefully then it all pans out. The beast from the east was great to experience but I appreciate a lot of people hate it.

Cannock chase was beautiful the other day.

Went up to the three shires yesterday. It was very cold, low cloud and looked very bleak. Loved it.

So as the snow wasn't coming to me I went to the snow ,climbed to both peaks of rough tor and Brown willy ,place was full of family's sledging and walking ,it's not a hard walk by any means but great places for a flask of tea

Absolutely ridiculous frost here and not even at its peak - glad I'm not going anywhere early morning.

EDIT: Got down to -4.8C this morning and heavy frost - everything white - first time it has felt properly like winter in ages.

EDIT2: It is actually snowing now - though a bit tragic light snow almost apologetic.

To us oldies what's being shown as snowed over is just a sprinkling - Snowed over is when you can't see any dirt or vegitation or even the roads. Unfortunately/fortunately those days seem to be over now.
I like to see a new fall of snow but very glad it's gone the next day.

last heavy snow I saw in England was probably about 7 years ago.

Seeing more snow here again now. I overlook a 'T' junction about 1/3 the way up a steepish hill. Not seen anything bar a RangeRover make it up in around an hour. If it keeps up at this rate we will have a fair bit again. We had 4-6" with the first lot. We are about 650ft above sea level so always catch some. Not seen it like this for a few years.
