Winter 2020/2021

Drove back earlier today it either rained, sleeted or had wet snow/slush falling out of the sky especially near southampton. None of it laid however though driving over the moor in the pouring rain there were still odd patches of snow lingering here and there so there must have had a fall sometime over the last few days. Shame it would have been such a long drive to have seen it.

Meanwhile once in the SE amazed to find not only was it not raining it was actually dry.

Went up to the three shires yesterday. It was very cold, low cloud and looked very bleak. Loved it.

Aww thats lovely havn't seen anything like that in many a year, or snow even.

According to the Arpege model, which has usually been accurate enough, quite a bit of the country will see sporadic wintery showers over the next few days though nothing notable except high ground.

Looks like quite a band moving across Thursday but coming on the front of a slight up tick in temperatures so likely won't stick around long and probably be less and less the further south you are.
 
Just rain and more rain forecast here though its darn cold. Scotland they're skating on ponds etc if the news last night was anything go by. When I were a lad this would have been snow, snow and more snow here but thats a thing of the past now.
 
Haven't checked in depth this evening but the morning model updates were quite a dramatic switch away from the wintery outcomes after 2 days :( ending the run with the kind of erratic output you get with an SSW in the equation where they have no clue what to make of it.

EDIT: Interestingly the end of the run hinted at warmer damper stuff coming in from the Atlantic (which is usually a spoil sport for wintery weather) just as cold started to build from the east - could make for interesting conditions if those collided.

EDIT2: Looking at it in a bit more depth looks like the cold is tending to sink southwards into the continent rather than come our way :(

-3C here forecast for tonight but looks like Friday/Saturday nights will be colder - then jump up a bit for the next few days after that.
 
We've had nothing down here in Bucks, Would love a bit of snow so we can take our 2 year old daughter out in it.
 
-5c this morning when I got up - Everything was white -ground - all my shed and summer house and fence panels - bushes and trees -that's all over the sides not just on top - Did look really wintery.
Suns now out - clear blue sky so we might have it again tonight.

Doesn't look likely to me - there is cold starting to move across Russian and Scandinavia but looks like it will go south before it gets anywhere near us possibly even plunging towards Greece or the Black Sea region.

Looks like towards the end of the month the Atlantic is going to do its spoilt sport thing and send milder, moister muck our way - an outside chance it might collide with cold from the east over the UK at around the same time but odds are pretty low IMO.

In the longer term late Jan into Feb recent polar disturbances might have an influence on UK weather but that is pretty hard to determine - even the weather models just give up trying to resolve anything.
