Winter 2020/2021

Looks like the central South might see some light dusting of snow tomorrow maybe - the feature he is talking about is looking like being less significant and further south for the most part.

Got fairly steady snow falling here now, far too wet to settle though. Nice big flakes of it is pretty to see :)

Edit - it's starting to settle, huge flakes falling.

Stoke should see more accumulations into the early hours of the morning.

5-6 miles further north but not seen anything new overnight. However it's just started again this morning (8:00ish) Fine flakes to begin with, starting to turn into larger flakes now, all of it sticking again. If it continues it's going to be very treacherous for driving and nasty under foot.

Might be fun for a lot of us, but makes life hard for people in the countryside. Hopefully won't be much of it for that long.

Scientific observations (ie based on how far the dog's poo sank in) show it at over an inch up here in sunny Cheshire. We had a bit yesterday, and some stayed on cars overnight, so the proper, crunchy, snowman and sledging snow that's falling now is settling straight away.

Now to scare away some starlings again before the steal all the bird food.

WTH. I'm in Netley and haven't seen a flake

I got wet cycling to work in Shirley just after 0800, but no obvious flakes all day. Ice warning is after 1000 tomorrow, so fingers crossed no skating for me on the way in for another shift, or on the way home at ~1600.

Mad. I know it has to start and stop somewhere but it looked so thick and snowed for about 45 minutes. Didn't take long to start laying either which gave us a nice light dusting before to long.

Says sleet on mine

Early on today when I posted, it was showing heavy snow for SO18 between 8pm and 1am, its now changed to a mix of snow and sleet. It's certainly going to be cold enough I reckon so fingers crossed.

Can you explain what this means?

Massively generalising but those areas of high pressure (where the numbers go up 1000+ the closer to the middle of the rings you get) when positioned to the North of us (or in some cases other positions) tend to draw cold air from the arctic regions downwards towards us (and in some cases hold warmer air from the south away from us) the positions of the areas of low pressure can also have an influence on conditions in some cases being huge generators for snow when mixing cold air with other conditions such as warm moist air from further south. (Look up things like Greenland High and Scandinavian High).

One of the problems at the moment is that though the setup is very conducive to winter weather - there isn't the mass of cold around to draw from there would have been 10+ years ago - a few decades back this kind of setup would have seen moderate snow across much of the UK already with more substantial winter weather to come.

The second week of Jan onwards looks potent with some significant polar disruption but how it will unfold is another matter - IMO a lot of the cold is going to go the US's way yet again.
