Winter 2022/23 - It's too cold :(

Cold but nice and sunny in South East. Meant I could go out and get one of the tree trunks that I was saving for a wintery day in and chopped up ready for the predicted -5 tonight.

Dam time fly's, it was cold back than for what felt like months! I remember sleeping in all my clothing some nights, and a hat.
I can remember the visual aspect of it all very well, we had icicles drooping from the rafters of the house, what I can't remember is the cold, for some reason this current spell feels colder than that one, maybe it's just because the summer was so hot
It started to snow 27th Nov 2010 as my friend went into labour with her 1st born.
Yes it was a long spell of winter, that started in Autumn, a bit like this current spell, although it's ending this weekend and it's not looking too cold going ahead

Night before last it was -12C in the Brecon Beacons, thought it would have been colder with you.
-3 here! - 12 is crazy cold! That's well into damaging territory of pipes etc

Got to +4 here today. Local lake is still frozen over though. But for the first time today.

Had to bring the backup Fridge Freezer in the house yesterday as it had gone off in the garage as it was too cold.
You can buy f/f that are garage friendly. My parents have two full upright freezers and an under worktop fridge in their garage! Plus f/f in kitchen

They moan about not having enough space!

Our Beko is garage friendly specifically designed to work in unheated spaces.

Have been a little worried about the washer in the garage though. Garage for to an all time low of 0.8c yesterday.

The sink in our garage is seized up, so I haven't tried the washing machine next to it. Torn between wanting this cold spell to end and not wanting to find out the damage! Seems pointless thawing it out, only for it to freeze up again.

One water butt outside is definitely cracked. No idea how far down it's frozen, but it sounds like all the way. This winter is getting expensive... and I had smart meters done on Tuesday, so I can see exactly how expensive, every minute.

Above 0 degrees for the first time all week here today. Haven't had to blast the heating quite as much so there's definitely one benefit.

<sigh> Closer examination showed a burst pipe, blown hosepipe connector, blown compression joint, and 2 hours faffing about in the garage so that, when I summon weekend rate assistance in the morning, it'll hopefully only be expensive rather than very expensive to fix. Think I'll just get the pipes capped and the system pressurised again to avoid more problems while the weather's like this.

Fortunately I have another washing machine that I nearly left at my flat (currently being sold so I can hopefully buy Mum's place now she's shuffled off, bless her) which is in the kitchen.

Right, back to anxiously watching pipes, waiting for them to drain fully.

Not had heating on today and I can actually open my car door (was frozen all week). Going to be 15 degrees in Leeds Monday, practically summer :)

I see on the buzz 2 bad years which started like this winter mentioned.

2010 which recovered by January.
1978 which lasted entire winter and was a record. O_o I was born during this winter.

1962/3 began in late December and went through to early March in places. A full winter.
