Winter 2023/24 - It's FREEZING!

Models seem to be picking up on something around the 10-12th Jan but struggling to resolve the feature - some of the runs are going for silly extreme cold but aren't entirely unsupported outliers, does look short lived whatever it is though and could just as easily be unseasonable warmth.

These long range things always make me laugh.

Tldr: It may be cold, but it may be warm. It may be wet or it could be dry etc etc.

Just looking at how cold it getting overnight I wouldnt be surprised if there snow at somepoint.

We've come to the North East coast for New Years and it feels very nice. The SW wind is pretty much blocked out so even the wind is low.

While I most certainly could not stand that sort of cold on a daily basis, I always run hot, so would love a weekend away to experience that and cool myself down for a day's
A lot of it has to do with altitude and the amount of moisture in the air, when I'm in the Rocky Mountains in Canada in winter and its -40, it actually doesnt feel any different to something like -2 or -3 in the UK. Often times when in Canada it will be -30 and I still go out without a coat on , just a couple of heavy shirts instead and am fine with just that. I was told by locals that its because there is very little moisture in the air in the mountains and thats why although the actual temperature is -30 to -40 it doesnt feel like it, but if I was closer to sea level it would feel absolutely freezing at the same temperature.

That's interesting, I didn't know that! Where abouts in Canada are you?

Yeah, it's the same in Colorado up in the mountains, very little moisture in the air usually so it doesn't feel particularly cold - though you need to drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated.

Currently, Banff in Alberta, high up in the Rockies :) , I come here every Christmas to New Year period in order to actually get a Christmassy Christmas instead of the September/October-esque Christmas that I'd get if I stayed for Christmas back home in the UK :)

bit of a breeze out in the New Forest today. a few downpours but managed to dodge them whilst out for a walk.

My father usually jets off to Malta or somewhere sunny and warm I think I'd rather be where you are.

loved skiing Banff when i lived in Calgary .. so much open beautiful country side .. :)

Just had a massive thunder storm in Leeds, it shook the house. Now just very windy again with rain.
We got this in Calderdale about twenty mins before you. Never seen so much lightning. Lasted about fifteen mins. On the way back home yesterday I encountered the worst rain I have ever seen in the UK on the M6 north of Preston.

Weather warnings galore here. Have to go out tomorrow morning, typical. The drains don’t get unblocked anymore, so the dual carriageway will be flooded, probably across both lanes of the rain is heavy enough. Fun.
