Woke up to find £700 taken from my paypal on my birthday

This is why I refuse point blank to ever let Paypal have my bank account details. My cousin works for a bank and the number of horror stories I've heard from her about customers having money stolen from them by/through paypal is staggering.

I only gave them credit card details, and even then only so I could use ebay. At least if my credit card was compromised I could just dispute the charges and refuse to pay the bill.

lol i wish...

Jones Automotive

Completed

wtf is this! i don't see anything worth £732 on there!

Might have been multiple items. Shouldn't be hard to track down if it was to another account.

thanks all for birthday wishes, anyway, just want to get this sorted asap as i need the money to book my plane tickets for holiday next month :|

what shall i say?

You're worried they've been a victim of fraud as you've seen that £700 has gone from your PayPal account to them without your authorization.

If the money has only gone today, chances are they won't have dispatched yet.

so i called the guy, seemed nice. i told him what happened and told him i have contacted paypal regarding this. He said he rejects payments he is not expecting or something like that. But ye, i have made him aware of the situation now too. Hopefully it helps.

has the payment got a delivery address on it? If so and its not your own give the guy a call - he'll be happy to be informed of the fraud in advance so he doesn't end up shipping items out to a fraudster. He might even refund you straight away!

Do you re-use your password across sites? if so start changing them all now, something has been compromised (chances are its not PayPal, most likely something like Linked in or one of the other recent high profile hacks) and they've lucky guessed your password on PP.

If it was unique the chances are you either fell for some phishing scam, logged in through a fake wireless hotspot and got sniffed or have a key logger on your machine.

Time to get scanning and re-set all your important passwords pronto - and if your re-using look at getting a password management program like 1password or lastpass

That's what I said.

Sorry to hear of your problem OP.

Not that it is any help now but I would never link a Paypal account to anything other than a credit card or a spare bank account with a nil balance and no overdraft.

thanks for the help guys, i panicked and removed the bank card from the paypal account. But then thought, how will paypal refund me now :S ? shall i add the card back? or will they still be able to refund my card?
